Snaps From The Road #2

Steinbeck called it the mother road, overly enthusiastic boosters called it the Main Street of America, but no matter what you call it, Route 66 is probably the most well known stretch of highway in this country. Where better to go searching for the American Dream?

According to Wikipedia, in it's heyday it was a microcosm for America. If we're being honest, it probably still is. Eisenhower signed its death warrant when he created the interstate system, the traffic went elsewhere and Route 66 slowly withered. This art deco gas station in Shamrock, Texas is one of the few examples of such. Called the U-Drop Inn, it closed for good in the 90s, but has since been restored.

Paid a visit to preserved stretch of Route 66 in Amarillo, Texas that was still managing to eke out an existence on the nostalgia circuit. Not sure why but there was quite a proliferation of murals there, matched only by some rather cryptic inscriptions.

We're in Santa Fe, New Mexico now but we couldn't pass Cadillac Ranch and not stop and say howdy. Still haven't located the American Dream but ten Cadillacs half buried in a cow pasture seems like a pretty good sign we're on the right track.

Naturally it rained but that proved to be a good way to get the place to ourselves. Going to stay relatively stationary for the next few days, explore Santa Fe a bit, will post more when I get a chance.

Until next time, y'all stay dry.

It's such a shame about that Route, from what I've heard and seen, it was a lovely road. I enjoyed the Caddis, but what a waste of good cars. Hope your stay there is cool and you get some better weather

It is, although it's still interesting to see it in the later stages of it's life cycle. Would have loved to have been able to experience it in its heyday. The Cadillacs are something to see for sure, in a way people are still getting something from them that I'd doubt would have happened if they'd stayed out of art. Thanks! The weather has definitely taken a turn for the better, think we'll have sunny skies for a good little while.
