Attention:Are You Giving It Away or Using It Smartly?

Attention is one of the most valuable assets of today’s hyperconnected world. This is a gift we offer every moment, often without the full realization of its power. Every swipe, every click, every second spent on a screen is a transaction. Today lots ot people are trading it for free or user engagement-oriented points and someone else, somewhere, cashing on that attention. A great example of this is social media platforms. For you to use some of their services, they do not charge you a thing, this is because you’re not their customer, you are their product.

These platforms collect your data, analyze your behavior and then sell your attention to businesses, making a profit in the process. Every second you spend on them is money in their pocket. If your time is their money then It's a one sided deal which only profits them. But here is the twist: even in this case the platforms profit more from users attention and users profit less. It may feel rewarding to get dopamine hits from likes and follows, but almost never equals value.

In the meantime, your attention is being siphoned off, your productivity eroded, and your potential squandered. So the question then becomes, where are you spending your attention, and what are you getting paid in return? Attention is the new currency, and like any currency, what you do with it decides your returns. I think it's chllsing hwere you spend your attention is as eqaully important as where you choose to invest money.

Do you turn to platforms that merely extract from you, or those that allow you to take back your power? Today, however, there are digital spaces that turn the whole equation on its head—where creators, thinkers and builders are compensated for their contributions. Spaces around which attention is not only harvested, but spread. Like the Hive blockchain, you can earn value, build community, and amplify your voice through engagement.

There other platforms that provide some sort of value these days but the key thing is about being intentional, strategic with your attention. What you pay attention to literally creates your world. It feeds into your ideas, expands your abilities and can create financial returns if you exchange it smart enough. Now you must remember that this is a gift you yourself have. Guard it, cherish it, and reinvest it into the spaces that pay you back for using it. Since attention is the new currency market, choose where to spend yours wisely.

That's precisely it. Users are the product of social media businesses and the equation is so much skewed towards the former that they can ban users out of their platform and still become profitable.

That's quite unfair and something that happens frequently on most Web2 platforms

I knew about this a long time ago but after I came to understand it, I began giving my attention wisely to what really matters. This is something I believe most people must understand and until they do, they’ll keep going back and forth.

It is as you say, something that most users need to understand; that they are exploited everyday of their attention, when they can rather leverage to their advantage.

@collinz This hits deep!
We’re out here spending hours online, but the real question is are we gaining or just giving?
Love the reminder to be intentional with our attention and invest it where it actually pays off! 🔥

People need to give attention to something that benefits them, I wish many people out there have this understanding, and live a beautiful life.

Unfortunately most people are yet to realise this

Some people spend 10+ hours on social media. No, not because of business or anything important but only for entertainment and time pass. That says it all...where our attention is going.

Using that time in something productive, even like in Hive can pay us off.

Great point and write-up.

Thanks for your kind words. I have always believe there should be win win game but unfortunately that has not been the case, big players winning big time; which is why I love Hive
