Should Hackers Like Eric Council Jr. Get a Plea Deal?
The recent news about U.S. prosecutors potentially offering a plea deal to Eric Council Jr., the hacker behind the SEC's X account breach, brings up a lot of questions. Council’s hack led to a fake post that briefly caused Bitcoin’s price to spike by $1,000 before crashing by over $2,000 once the message was confirmed as fake. This wasn't just any breach; it was a calculated SIM-swap attack, allegedly with a payoff in Bitcoin.
The timing was right before the SEC’s approval of Bitcoin ETFs. I think giving someone like Council a lighter sentence through a plea deal could send the wrong message about hacking serious regulatory accounts, especially with the impact it had on market confidence.
What's your take?
