The Keen Sense of Smell

The last seed of my parents would always say that "Prehistoric Humans possessed similar instincts like animals or something close in comparison to be able to survive such a dangerous era but after years of genetic mutations and the invention of tools, mankind continued to lose the potency of their abilities, the idea of kill or be killed evolved into something else and thus our ancestors sort out other means to survive". According him, he is still unable to prove his supposed theory because he lacked empirical evidence as a large of the basis for his arguments came from movies and was lacking in credibility. I believe the young man is up to something as the theory of evolution exists for a reason. Sadly he is not even interested in making research on the topic or even try to prove his point but I do believe there are certain truths to this, we just can't prove it yet🤣🤣.

For years, mankind has pride itself as being the apex creature of all living beings owing this title to their ability to reason, subjugate other animals and create tools that enables them take control of their environment. Our brain happens to be our biggest weapon giving us an edge over everything on earth, a resource we have used to our advantage until we can proudly refer to ourselves as being at the top of the food chain. However in introspection, having the most proficient brain power doesn't necessarily mean supremacy above everything else. Despite being the most intelligent creatures, animals still possess certain traits which can even rival this ability we are so proud of in terms of relevance. Animals (especially those in the wild) do not see the world the same way us humans do and although our ability to reason is sufficient for our continuous growth and existence, countless animal species possess incredible senses that beats ours in other fields of usage.

Let's talk about the sense of smell for example, while the human nose can only perceive the smell of things around them, animals take it steps further by being able to scents from miles away. With their nose alone, animals (especially predators) can detect their prey, comprehend fear, recognize something or someone they've come in contact with before and grow suspicious of impending danger. The range of their noses is so vast that to us humans, it feels like a broken ability and a cheat code all rolled into one and i bet a lot of people would leap for joy at the very idea of being able to have it if given the opportunity.

I was watching a documentary on Nat Geo wild about a lioness who mated outside her Pride and tried to return back with three cubs that were obviously offsprings from the outside. Right from the very moment she walked into the pride, the leader could tell something was wrong and in just a few minutes the scent of their biological father gave the cubs away and at that moment he knew kids were not his own. He immediately attacked their mother with the intentions to kill the cubs which he perceived as a threat to his lineage but luckily for them mother was able to defend them until they could all escape into the wild to live in exile away from the pride.

The intensity of the sense of smell is one ability that I would love to have especially in today's society. Having something versatile will really place me among if not above the top one percent of the entire human race while keeping me intoned with my surroundings. The problem with having this kind of amped up ability as a human is that it usually corrupts the mind when it is not handled with care. Greed grows and wants become insatiable until destruction becomes inevitable, I just hope I am to under the concept of "with great power comes great responsibility" when the time comes.
