Wednesday Crabapple Walk

The mid-springtime blooming of the trees and flowers is definitely a wonderful thing to experience. One of the real benefits for me is getting to explore some of the different areas and the various trees and plants that they offer for the visual benefit of everyone! The crabapple tree is definitely a star of the tree realm, and one that I really didn't understand or appreciate until I would say this year!

The past couple of years, I've seen the trees around where we live and noticed that some of them flower and have a really wonderful smell at a part in the springtime different than others. I didn't really know what they were though until I got a plant identification app on my phone and decided to snap a picture of them. That's when I found out that these beautiful trees, that I've seen more and more once you notice what they are, are in a lot of places!

The crabapple tree is one that I knew from childhood, because we built a fort in a crabapple tree near my parents house. We would terrorize the people walking by or playing baseball from the tree because we would camp out up there and periodically throw some crabapples at the people LOL we were little hellions sometimes! Thankfully we didn't get beat up for it, because that was likely an end result if we kept going. We did get yelled at pretty good one time and I think that ended the idea of throwing them at people haha.

With the tree though, I didn't really understand how remarkable it can be to see it when it's in full bloom! I don't remember too much of some of those things from when I was a kid but I certainly remember the apples themselves. I'm curious if I would remember any of the tree if it had these beautiful blooms like I know these ones do.

The crabapple trees around us where we live now though are quite numerous! When we drive, we can see them from quite a distance away. This beauty right here is one that we saw from our parking spot about a half mile away across the field. It was a giant one and absolutely full of wonderful and vibrant white flowers, waiting for someone to come over and give it a sniff! The pollinators were absolutely thrilled by it as well, having them flying all around the thing and getting a considerable amount of nectar and pollen all about. I wanted to sit underneath this thing and just smell the stuff and listen to the worker bees going nuts over the tree. I didn't have the time to do that though, sad as it is. I did make sure to give it a good smell while I was taking the photos though!

There was another great one nearby as well, with a nice view of the river in the early spring. A lot of the plants and grasses weren't really fully grown yet, as it was still kind of early in springtime but the tree was a beacon of light for all the wildlife that's for sure! I loved seeing the vibrant and giant blooms everywhere, and having them be white instead of yellow or red or some other color I think is also pretty nice. There are parts of the flower that are pink but I think that's likely just the beginning parts of it. After it was all said and done and the flower was wide open, it was all white and really easy for the various pollinators to come on by to take some samples!

I think overall there were 3 of these giant crabapple trees on the path that I was walking on. Two of them were kind of close to each other and the subjects of the photos today, with one other one being quite a bit further down but also completely entrenched in really tall grass around it so I didn't want to go over there and get into tick territory lol. I know for certain though that I am a little sad that the tree has finished it's blooms and is done for the season. They are shifting to making little fruits which is fine, but the fruits are sadly not edible for people for whatever reason. I know the fruit is also poisonous to pets, so it's a good thing that people aren't really disturbing the trees too much with their dogs around. That wouldn't be good!
