Upcoming Autumnal Hikes

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to go back into the past in anticipation of what I can do in the future!

Upcoming Autumnal Hikes

I know that some people in the New England area would like to hit me for looking forward to the autumn and the variations that come along with it. I can't help but look forward to cooler temperatures and my personal favorite: hiking!

What better way to commemorate the upcoming hikes that I will be embarking on than taking a look at some pictures that I took last year but for whatever reason didn't post them?! Well I was searching for older photos that I happened to forget and stumbled upon a series here so I had to transpose them into a post for the lovely Hive community!

The little man and I went on a walk last year around the end of the year and it was this forested area that I haven't been to before, but that's not entirely shocking as I largely stuck to the regions immediately around us for so long. Now that we can get to venturing out though, we've made it a point to get out into the surrounding area and having some fun! The little ma particularly liked this area because it had this one section with these massive boulders in it, and sure enough he was climbing away! We also happened to randomly run into this small family lol and he was climbing with their son as well.

The region was indeed beautiful however holy shit was it cold! The day we chose happened to be one of the days that it got into the teens I think it was, overnight and the day didn't warm up much past 30 but the wind chill is where it really fucked you up. The wind was ripping and with the forest here, the trees being completely bare of leaves it really didn't do a whole lot to help reduce the ferocity of the wind. There was frozen ground everywhere, and the small puddles dotting the region were all partially frozen! Not safe enough to walk on of course but still frozen nonetheless. I do like the frozen small bodies of water that are out in the regions of the forest like this though, it provides quite the unique perspective!

The gigantic boulders are what was the most interesting about the place. Apparently people come from all over to see these things, locally of course. Apparently how the story goes is that the glaciers deposited these boulders a long ass time ago, how long I can't begin to imagine because 1 - history is largely a lie to us about the various dates that things occur, to conform a timeline to whatever foolish narrative is being driven and 2 - the dating of these types of things is largely impossible currently. Carbon 14 dating is good however when it comes to dating rocks, it's largely entirely useless. The rocks themselves will nearly always come back as two or three million years old or something crazy, because the rocks themselves are! How long ago they got there though, is something that the dating cannot accomplish. I guess a long winded answer to say that I don't know when these were brought lol but they were brought by glaciers.

It's pretty wild to think of these gigantic 40 or 50 ton boulders, and those are even the "smaller" ones being picked up like a pebble and dropped down equally like a pebble by forces that are sheer magnitudes greater than most things we can comprehend these days. Wild shit for sure!

One of the things that's hard as a parent is that I'm always conflicted between letting him do things that are inherently dangerous, and not letting him. Yes the rocks are pretty awesome and I would love to climb all over them but with age comes experience and some sense of danger that helps to prevent some injuries. Not always, to be clear, but often. With my son, he's got amazing balance and skills but gets a little too brave and adventurous so it's a gut check watching him up on the rocks and me trying my best not to yell at him to get down.

Kids need these experiences and they also need to not always be told "get down you can hurt yourself!" because that's damaging for them and their abilities. They gain confidence when they are able to do these things and we should nurture those types of skill building activities. As I said though, it's fucking difficult LOL. He's great on the rocks but watching him go up and down was definitely tough! I think I eventually told him to get down and that we needed to keep on walking, to prevent any additional angst for myself lol.

I enjoyed the walk for sure, even if the temperatures were insanely cold but the pictures were also pretty awesome as well! I love the look of the craggy frozen ground here, with the water freezing downward towards the earth and it looking like the sides of a frozen cliff. The little man and I will be back to this area sometime in the future, hopefully when it's not as cold as it was, but will go with a bit of a better idea of where we are exploring. With this trip here we were just wandering around, not sure where we were going which is okay. We did spend a bit of time going in the wrong direction though, not towards anything interesting lol so we will refine our trajectory for sure next time!

Hahaha yeah dude me too, there was a giant boulder near my parents house and I would climb it all the time! I know that my parents weren't thrilled about it but I did it anyway. I guess I can't get too mad at my son because I did the same LOL

You know there is a way that the sun makes pictures look. It makes them look perfectly beautiful just like this one. It is indeed a lovely picture

I myself am very fond of seeing such different stones, especially the way we see in the pictures, this place is also very beautiful.
