Unexpected Friends
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share a few photos of some friends that we got, but unexpectedly enjoyed!

Unexpected Friends
There are always things that the little kids are into, that end up surprising us, I think!
The little man got to have a bit of fun at school several weeks back. The class had gotten some butterflies for the end of spring and it was a good science lesson for them all, as well as a bit of enjoyment to round out the year. We had a batch of butterflies a few years ago ourselves, but it's been a while since we hatched some, so when the little man had to miss the ONE day of school that the butterflies got released on.. we knew that we had to make up for it!
Butterflies are kind of gross in some ways.. seeing them in the caterpillar stage and then morphing up to the butterfly, there was a lot of nasty stuff involved lol. They ate a lot, shit a lot and then created their cocoon and some of them ended up dying, creating this little black turd on the bottom of it all. It was quite the experience, I do say so LOL
The little man has been having fun with it though! He's been asking for a pet for a while, and we haven't let him have one of the typical ones because that would require taking care of it.. and the taking care part would last for two or three days max before it became MY responsibility lol. I know that's what happens with kids all the time, so I've been holding off on it for sure. One day, most likely, but not yet!
The butterflies end up being a pretty good compromise between it all! We get to let him have a fun pet for a few weeks, and he gets to enjoy looking at them every day. He actually ended up keeping two of them because they had fucked up wings, which is a little sad but at the same time a little comical. I feel bad for the little fellas, in some ways. They want to get outside and fly around which is their natural instinct but at the same time, they don't have a way to consistently fly. One of them is pretty friendly and has given into his fate!
The other one is pretty feisty still, in that he flies around the enclosure we keep him in quite a bit. It's not a painful type of thing for him, but it's just he is the little butterfly that WANTS to, but just can't. He's got a curved wing, so his flying is more circular than it is flying lol oh well, he gets to enjoy a pretty easy life!
The really cool thing about these critters though is the colors on them are freaking awesome! There are some really magnificent oranges and whites which is pretty dope. Plus the pattern on their wings when they have them folded up is also pretty awesome.
I want to invest in a nice macro lens for the camera.. these pictures don't do a lot of justice to the fellas! Granted I don't know if any of these are girls or boys, but I am just calling them boys for now. Getting myself up close and personal to them, and them just looking at me with their cool looking eye is pretty sweet. The pattern in their eye kind of reminds me of a lizard somehow, it is square-ish and stuff.
In all, we had 20 butterflies. We thought the first batch of them died.. so we got another only to have ALL of them hatch hahaha, well almost all. We had like 3 or 4 die in the cocoon stage but that's okay. We did our duty of raising and releasing some pollinators! I certainly hope that we didn't introduce an invasive species.. but I don't think so. If we brought a good one in, we at least released a good 15 or so for the population to breed and hopefully keep it going!
What about you, have you raised and released anything like butterflies? Let me know in the comments!

Super cool that you're hatching butterflies, I've never done that! It's funny how we feel a connection to a creature after helping bring it to life—like those butterflies! 🤣
I thought butterflies only lived for a week or so. Are yours immortal?
Hahaha yeah dude it's pretty cool to hatch them! They live anywhere between 2 weeks and 6 months if you feed them right. The ones we have are going to live maybe just a bit over 2 weeks, as my son stopped feeding them LOL poor things. I kept them alive.. but he has since ignored them. Thank god we got these things instead of a dog or something hahaha
It's beautiful how you made it up to your son for the day he missed and the result wasn’t just educational, but deeply human too.
Yeah it was a cool way to remedy a negative situation I think!
Beautifully precious creatures! It was also a kind of gross experience for me when I first watched a documentary on how butterflies came to be lol. I mean, it's also kind of otherworldly when you observe the contrast of the transformation from one state to another.
Yeah dude the transformation from one state to another really is wild! They become this weird gelatinous soup and somehow form a butterfly after all that?! Nuts lol
