The Request
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to talk about getting organized to then ask for a raise at work!

The Request
I think one of the important things we can do in life, is gauging our worth and then acting on it!
I've talked a fair bit about the change in my company, and how that has impacted me and the things that I do day to day. It has been challenging for sure, but at the same time it has really allowed me to dig in and dive into the things that I love to do, and really combines almost all of my interests into one! It's really a phenomenal opportunity.
I know that this might be a fleeting opportunity, in that companies get bought and sold all the time, and some go belly up after changes so it's anyone's guess as to how this plays out long term. I think we have a really good niche where we're at, so I think we can for sure survive for many more years as long as AI doesn't completely take things over, which is always a possibility.
With the restructuring changes that happened at my company, I basically took on multiple other people's roles without a change in salary. I have talked about this things like this in the past, where it's important to take a thing like this head on, roll with it as long as we can and make sure we do the best that we can do. Eventually it will come time to pay up the cost of what we are doing, but for now, I am letting it roll as I take it as one of the best learning opportunities I can get!
I am compiling a list of the things that I am doing in my role, and comparing it to what my group was doing before with far more people. I am giving it a few months and then going to talk to my boss, who is now one of the executives of the company, and going to essentially make my case for why I need a pretty substantial raise compared to what I'm doing right now.
Because this is an incredibly delicate conversation, one of the best things that we can do is come at it with plenty of documentation. If we are taking the things that we've done over the last few months or years, and putting them into a formal list with bullet points as to how we have improved our internal processes and helped out teammates, then we can really make the case for why we need a raise.
I think this is where a lot of people miss the mark. A business is a business and businesses are about making money. If they don't have someone asking for something like a sizeable raise, they are not going to give it to them. As much as we would like to think it would happen, the likelihood of them offering up a sizable improvement in compensation is pretty minimal.
This is why I am working on building my case, combining many of the datapoints that I've got so far, and getting together a business justification as to why I am an incredible asset to the company. I don't like to toot my own horn, but I can wear multiple hats where many can wear one and a half. Essentially I do the work of 4 different people in this new capacity, maybe 4.5 considering that I've written so much of the documentation that we use on a daily basis.
This is not to say that I am bitter or anything about what I am doing. I love the work that I do and if forced to, would continue to do the same role I am doing for the same pay even though I do the work of many individuals. I think there is a balance between work and job satisfaction, and if you can get a good deal with job satisfaction, then the work you are doing comes a bit easier.
At any rate though, I will for sure be asking for a hefty raise in a few months!
What about you, do you find situations where you are doing more than what is being asked for, and will do it in the interest of future prospects? Let me know in the comments!

I typically have to do this twice since my wife often has me write a letter on her behalf as well. It's quite the process!
Hahah yeah it's funny how that works. Some of us just have a better way with words!
What a fantastic and well-thought-out approach to asking for a raise! Documenting your expanded responsibilities and contributions is absolutely key - businesses do love their bullet points and metrics. Your positive attitude about taking on extra work as a learning opportunity is refreshing, though I'm glad you're not planning to be a permanent martyr to the corporate cause.
The multiple hats analogy is perfect - maybe bring an actual stack of hats to the meeting for dramatic effect? "This one's for coding, this one's for documentation, this one's for..." Best of luck with your upcoming salary negotiations! You've clearly earned it.
Thanks, yeah it's important to be methodical in these things. You don't necessarily need to document every little thing you do but the times you go above and beyond and do it with grace and enjoyment are important. Also good words from colleagues or customers certainly helps! Lol.
With a well thought out presentation, you can usually get at least something! I'm going to shoot for the moon and see where it all lands!
The day the sun comes out is also a special day. The pictures are much more beautiful on that day.
Yeah I love the sun!
Hmm for me, I feel that I don't have much control over matters such as remuneration. But one thing I can control is how I feel and my response. I have had periods where I wasn't appreciated by some bosses but I have had periods where some bosses value my contributions. I haven't really changed, but the person appraising me was different, and it's human nature that people have their own preferences and criteria when they judge. I agree with you that it's definitely more motivating if we get better raise but I have learnt in my own journey not to be hopeful about these stuff for my industry at least. Anyway, all the best in your endeavours!
