The Outdoor Setup

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to celebrate that I was able to set up a little desk for myself on the deck to work in the shade!

The Outdoor Setup

We all have a really big gap in our lives in the day that we live in: not enough outdoor exposure!

I've been one that my entire teenage and adult life, I make sure to get my ass outside at least once a day, sometimes for many, many hours. This is incredibly important in so many ways, and the more research I've been listening to and reading, the more I am really glad about that desire for myself!

One of the things that is challenging about the workplace, whether you are on-site, hybrid or remote, is that you tend to not get enough outdoor time. I am certainly in that category of people! The benefit of working from home though, is that I get to partially dictate my working environment so I made sure to get some improvements in that area!

The place that I'm living at now is nice in that is relatively quiet and it's got a good amount of outdoor green space. It's not perfect by any stretch but it's actually quite nice. We have a deck and the deck is on the top floor which is even better, because the deck gets loads and loads of sun all day. That is especially helpful for the plants as they are growing, though I don't know how many plants we will be putting out this year.

The deck is also a pretty good size in that it can fit quite a bit on it. Today I decided to really commit to trying to see what I can do to work outside instead of sitting inside all the time and boy was it worth it!

In the condo I live in, the closets are filled with shit. Thankfully that shit tends to come in handy sometimes lol and one of the things that got stuffed into the closet was an old foldable table, the ones that you see at function halls and shit that can collapse and the legs can squish in on themselves. The table was just enough to do what I needed to do outside: house my laptop, a power cable and a second monitor!

One of the challenges that I will get used to working outside like that is I can only do it in the afternoon because the sun is way too bright to be doing it in the morning with it directly beaming down on you. That is totally fine though, because it gives me a chance to do a mixture of both. The mornings are coffee time, lots of meetings and shit like that and in the afternoon, it is usually more occupied with getting work and tasks done. I can take most of my meetings inside which is good, and the fun work can be done at my desk outside.

A little caveat that I've got with it is that I will have to set it up and take it down every time. The weather this time of year is a little unpredictable and it will rain randomly at night so I don't want to ruin my desk lol but I certainly enjoyed the ability get out there! I think now that I've done it a time, I can get a little more efficient at it. I can set that thing up in about 30 seconds and take it down in 30 so that's nice. It won't be a 5 minute deal or something which also isn't horrible, but we have to be efficient.
