The End is Nigh

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to think about the change I need to make soon!

The End is Nigh

..the end of Windows 10 support!

Like anything, there are going to be things that come and go. One of the challenges is that operating systems are so central to so many things in our lives these days, that we very often don't give it a second look until we have to.

I'm running up against the unfortunate end of Windows 10 support. I am certainly not a Microsloth fan, but their stuff is convenient, at least on the Windows 10 side. I have to use Windows 11 for work and that is a whole different ball of wax. I am used to it for sure now, but I have a lot of reservations about it, with how much it enjoys spying on you and collecting every bit of data to harvest and sell. Cute stuff isn't it?

I know that Krazytruker is likely going to throw a shoe at me for not getting my Linux setup completed yet hahaha but I DID give it a good attempt, but ended up running sideways a bit when I tried to dual-boot my computer. That wasn't happening given that this was an old work computer and they had Bitlocker on it, which fucked me sideways. I thankfully did get past it and I am now using the same laptop I tried before, but it was not an easy few hours LOL I thought I bricked my computer entirely.

I'm glad that I found a Linux distribution that I find is easy to work with, intuitive and has a lot of the same feels and features to it that the Windows 10 stuff does. It has some other elements of Windows 11 too, visually but the most important thing is that it's got privacy on the mind which is critical.

I think we all need to be a bit more concerned with the privacy aspect of it all, and I think people are starting to wake up to it. With the talk of companies like Pal%%antir (screw you SEO, no indexing that for you!) looking to harvest all of the data possible, link government databases and all that, it's pretty sketchy to say the least. A gigantic aspect of that is the operating system your computer is using.

Apple isn't any better, though they are just less open about it. Microsloth is very forward about using Copilot to harvest everything about you, and although it is now currently something you can remove, eventually they won't allow you to remove it. Does removing it even do anything, anyways? I have my doubts.

What gets a bit more insidious is that the laptop I got for work has the fucking Copilot button on the god damn keyboard! What the hell? I am pretty sketched out about that. That means the AI shit is baked into the damn CPU realm which is pretty scary to think about indeed.

I am remiss about losing the Windows 10 support for my laptop that I'm using, but at the same time, it's one of those things where it is bound to happen. It will end up being the kick in the pants that I need to get me off the damn thing and onto the Zorin version of Linux.

I'm not sure what to expect with the Linux but one thing I need to do is make sure that I can get the apps that I want on there, not that there's a lot, but just to have the things I need to use every day is the important part.

What about you, have you moved to Windows 11, or are you going to ditch 10 as well when it's EOL and go to Linux? Let me know in the comments!

I still have a number of machines in my environment that I need to get moved up to Windows 11. I also just found a machine the other day that is running windows 7. Like how does that happen?!

Hahaha back in 2019, we had an attack at my work. Nothing really terrible happened thank god BUT we identified one machine on Windows 98 and one on Windows XP :D

Yikes! I remember the days when I contracted at a hospital and we had to hit every machine to search for nimda or sircam.
