Stretching the Cables

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to appreciate being able to stretch a dollar in any way we can, and that includes the small things in the house!

Stretching the Cables

I'm one to use a lot of things until they are on their absolute last legs, or break complete. The other day my phone cable finally died.. 3 years later!

It was a sad day for sure that my phone cable broke, mainly because most of the cables these days do NOT fit in my phone case! I have one of those fully sealed phone cases to keep out water and all that, so the bottom of the case is sealed up to prevent water to seep in in case I drop it, as well as prevent dust and other unwanted things from getting inside the phone. That comes with it's challenges though, namely that the charging cable has to be a very specific size, the original size from the phone manufacturer, in order for it to fit! Damn it!

Because of this fact, I have been incredibly careful with my phone cables! We buy them off the internet, as do most people these days, but the issue is that the cables we buy very frequently don't fit my damn phone! lol. This makes it a real pain to shop for cables because how do you narrow it down to fit as it would from the factory? OEM? Hard to find OEM phone charger cables.. lol

I think that it's important to have this mindset with a lot of the things in our lives though. Yes it is often the case that buying things can benefit a small business but at the same time, there are a lot of things that we don't need to buy. I have been really trying to change my mindset over the last few years to one of scarcity. I won't go to the extreme of washing paper plates and stuff but I do try to stretch the dollars that we have as much as we can, and not buying all kinds of things like phone cables if I don't like the color or some shit is what I am trying to do.

The consumerist aspect of society is challenging because it's the manufacturers of the products that are causing a lot of the issues of today, namely pollution of the environment. It's not impossible to clean this up and do better, but they have a financial incentive to do things as quickly and cheaply as possible, which also means that safety and standards get thrown out the window. There are ample places in the United States that are clear examples of manufacturing processes gone wrong; cancers, permanent chemicals in the water, hormone disruption. Lots of other examples.

If we all change our mindset, which I think many thankfully are, to stretching a dollar we spend on something like this as much as we can, we can do a number of things. Save money is a primary one, especially as we are being afflicted with intentional economic destruction (a topic for a whole different day/post..), it's important to be able to stretch dollars and values as much as we can!

What about you, have you been trying to stretch things out as much as possible to save some money? What are some examples of you doing this? I would like to hear about them in the comments!

Heh, growing up my granny washed and reused drinking straws. She'd grown up during the Great Depression and we were taught that you don't throw anything away that's still useable and you don't buy anything if you can make it yourself. I try not to go to the extremes with it but for me it's hard to shake the scarcity mindset.

Yeah for sure he too, we can't and don't want to shake the scarcity mindset. It's important as a lifestyle so that you don't get used to just throwing stuff away constantly and buying more.

I know someone who's a sizable millionaire a few times over and he washes paper plates haha it's funny but he has a tough time growing up and engrained it into his lifestyle. Super nice man, but damn the things he does are pretty cheap lol

I used to be like you. I use things till their last breathe but not anymore. It’s good and important to save for emergency so it won’t meet us unprepared

Yeah it's good to have a lifestyle that allows for saving when appropriate but not always when it's an extreme.

I do this without even realizing that I’m saving money because my main purpose is to reduce waste as an environmentalist and that’s what has been in my mind all this while. But then yes! Those hangers, ear piece , kitchen tools we’ve been using for years at home probably have saved much money than we can think of because the last time I asked the price of hanger, I opened my mouth

Yeah it's important that we reduce our garbage waste in small ways like this. The planet doesn't have a "climate" issue, it's got a pollution issue. There are sadly so many pieces of trash on roads, floating in rivers, lakes and the ocean. It's really a shame! If we reduce the things we buy in these ways then it saves money and trash!
