Starting Clean

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk about the importance of very simple routines and how it starts as soon as we wake up!

Starting Clean

There are certain things that are important to try and do on a daily basis.

I am one that has been trying to make improvements to myself for as long as I can remember. I don't always succeed with this of course, but there is a significant amount of effort involved. One of those areas is trying to do things in a more organized and consistent way.

I've been trying to make my bed, and my sons bed, every morning for a few months now. I think this is an important thing and it's often one of the things that people say have started to help them improve their lives and their organizational skills.

By making the beds in the morning, I can have one aspect of my life that is clean and organized. I don't make the beds look perfect, but they aren't a bundled heap of sheets and blankets the way they were for many years.

I think this is an important thing for my son to see and to learn. Kids are incredibly observant, which is both very good as well as a little risky. They can pick up really bad habits, but also really good ones which is great. Unfortunately sometimes it seems like the bad ones are the ones that stay around for longer LOL damn!

I haven't had my son make the effort to make his own bed yet, but he is getting to the age where he wants to do more things on his own and he does a good job of organizing things that he likes such as his Pokemon cards and other things. This is an important thing because when we can instill a sense of organization and clarity in them, then it will transpose to other areas of their lives.

It is funny though, because I certainly used to scoff at making my bed in the morning as a kid. I was not one who had military parents, who would enforce crazy rules on things but sometimes I wonder if that would have served me well as I got older. I've certainly had my own issues with things like being clean and organized, but that has thankfully improved quite a bit I would think.

There are too many chaotic things in the world today, and I think an area that certainly has an effect or impact on it is how little people care to be clean and organized. I know in many of the podcasts I listen to, one of the things that the guests or hosts say was a big turning point in their adult life is when they want back to basics. They decided that they should make the bed every morning, That was a few years ago that I heard it, and it really wasn't until late last year that it really took effect for me.

The interesting thing about it as well now is that when my bed ISN'T made, I actually get annoyed when I look at it hahaha. I think that's good because it helps keep me on track. Getting the first thing accomplished for the morning is really good, and then the day can progress from there!

I don't even make my bed on the weekends after we wash the sheets! We don't use a top sheet though, we only use a fitted sheet and we each have our own blanket so we aren't fighting over that.

I think getting annoyed when you look at your bed and found out that it isn't made means this habit has been established into your life. It's easier nowadays to overlook the basics and try solving the big issues when we would've made much progress by starting with the basics and building up from there.

Getting the foundation first matters and I do make my bed in the morning consistently but it's not the first thing I do upon waking up. Doing it just after waking up has become the goal now but I tend to focus on meditation first and other miscellaneous task before coming back to it.
