Snowy Animal Track Walk

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to share a few photos of some recent excursion I had with my son where we spotted lots of animal tracks!

Snowy Animal Track Walk

Snow is for sure one of my favorite things for helping me figure out what types of animals are nearby!

When the snow is nice and freshly fallen, it makes it so easy to go out and figure out what the local wildlife is up to. You can find little trails all over the place, and I think that's really cool. It helps us remember that regardless of what's going on in the world, life goes on and the animals will do what they will always do regardless of the time of year. They just have different things they want to do, but most of it is around food.

We went on a nice little walk the other day after some fresh snow had fallen. This was good because it was also on the warmer side for once. With a few of the snow storms we've gotten, although it didn't drop a lot of snow overall, the days ended up being bitter cold afterwards which doesn't make it very fun to get out there and spend time in the elements for the little man. I can handle it myself, but I'm much more acclimated as an adult than he is, though he is getting there.

We saw quite a few animal signs when we were out there which was cool! One thing I wasn't expecting was to see beaver sign like this. We know that we've got beavers in some of the lakes and ponds but on the rivers we weren't sure that we would see them, especially this one as it's a very fast moving river. I guess the beavers don't care though, and they will find their home somewhere! I don't think the beaver cut the tree down in the storm, but this is certainly a fresh fell!

I think it's not surprising that one would see a lot of tracks like this. I am not entirely sure if these are racoon tracks or if they are squirrel tracks. They are fairly closed together but they don't have the distinct 2-paw hop of a bunny so I am thinking it is one of the other critters going around trying to find snacks or shelter or something. It could also be a coyote too, but I would be less inclined to think that one right here. In some of the other parts of the river for sure, but probably not here.

Here are those classic bunny tracks! We saw a number of these which was cool. The bunnies are constantly hopping around and finding things to nibble on so they can enjoy the winter time. The little man found these tracks here which was good because it's important for him to be able to do these things. I am certainly not a tracker but I do have some decent skills in trying to spot and figure out where the critters are going, and recognizing a few of the different ones.

When the snow is kind-of deep like this, it is sometimes a little difficult to figure out what it is since the animals aren't the biggest and they often squish their tracks trying to navigate through.

This one was funny to see, there are obviously families of bunnies in these bushes! Either that or the bunnies are running from something. We do have a family of eagles here which is really cool! They like to patrol the area, which we've seen and heard a number of times when we've been over here. That has been super cool to see, because we don't get to see eagles really well often since they like the high trees. A few times lately though when we've been in the area, we've seen the eagles take wing and fly over the river! That's absolutely breath taking to see and makes you choke up a little bit. They are fucking HUGE lol.

What about you, have you taken any walks lately? Let me know in the comments!

Naw, they find all kinds of stuff! They are voracious little eaters lol they will nibble on all kinds of plants and things. A few years ago I planted some flowers with my son in the dirt next to our parking spot. We walked to the trash to throw the waste away, came back MAYBE 3 minutes later and a damn bunny was actively eating the flower we JUST PLANTED hahaha it was very frustrating, but also very funny to see.

ITs cool to see the tracks left behind inthe snow, in our backyard we get cats and squirrels walking through often, but a little while back one morning I noticed a lot larger tracks but no idea what left them and our security camera didnt pick up what it was either, weird as it often catchs the cats and squirrels

Thanks for joining the Wednesday walk
Have a great day

That's cool! It could have been a fox, coyote or even a deer. There are quite a bit of those even in the urban and suburban areas! Gotta love checking out all the tracks though, fun stuff!

I have seen deers closer to the parks, and once saw Coyotoes walking in the cemetery behind us so was thinking perhaps it was a coyote

Very cool! We had some rabbit tracks through our front yard for a while, but the snow is all gone now.

Haha yeah the snow is gone here as well. It had a good run! I got to spend time on the ice like I wanted but we missed snow shoeing this year. There's always next year!

My wife and I have been thinking about snow shoes for a while now, but the good ones are pretty expensive and we have never been able to justify the cost.

Find a local second hand sports shop! We have one near us that the kids go to for trading in ice skates and stuff for bigger sizes etc and he sold us snow shoes for 45$! They were decent ones too, and I even got my wife a pair of really beautiful LL Bean ones for 60$ compared to new at the store like 150 or 200$ lol. I bet you likely have one or two places in your area that do this!

Awesome! Thank you for sharing 🙏 one of my favourite parts of being out in winter is the opportunity to look for footprints! 😄 And other wildlife signs, droppings, scratched trees, etc.

Here, we find similar wildlife. You will find signs of the beavers at work 😂 sometimes some bird and duck prints, or coyote... But yes, rabbit and deer are the most popular here, one time we stumbled upon a family of deer in the forest 😱

I hope you guys had fun! Enjoy the rest of your week 🙏

That's awesome, we've been lucky to see a few deer when my son and I went fishing a few years ago. They were on the other side of the pond we were fishing at but thankfully they couldn't get to us because I think it was a male with 2 females and he was NOT happy we were around lol. Too bad I couldn't have turned him into a freezer full of meat :D

The wildlife is for sure a great part of winter! I enjoy them being so exposed to us seeing them, makes for some fun walks!

It's hard for me to imagine walks in the snow. It's mostly hot summer and skyscrapers over here for my walks. Hehe.
