Smoky Monochrome Monday

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to share some photos that we took a few years ago of some beautiful smoky mountains!

Smoky Monochrome Monday

We've definitely gotten a lot of really fun and interesting travel that we've done. The best part is that it's all not too far away and you don't need to take a plane to get there! This flies in the face of the travel industry and their focus on airlines and flying to distant corners of the Earth to find beauty. There is plenty of beauty right in your back yard if you're able to take the time to notice it!

We took a few days off some years ago and knew that we were going to adventure up into the mountains. It ended up being quite an amazing and interesting trip, where we happened to stumble upon the perfect conditions: foggy mountains!

Having a blanket of fog lining the mountains isn't something that we get to see often. It's either clear or cloudy skies, or it's snowing or raining. There isn't a lot of inbetween but that's part of the beauty of it. When you are able to randomly catch that beauty, then you get to really enjoy a lucky break! We were able to enjoy such a break on this trip for sure.

I love looking up the mountains on normal days, seeing how tall they are and just thinking how fun but challenging it would be to hike up to the top. Eventually I'm going to do that with my son but in the meantime we were hanging out at the bottom enjoying the views and looking at the fog circling the mountain and putting on a show. It makes it look like a really soft blanket in a way haha.

The cool part as well when you get up fairly close to it, is that you can barely see the mountain in the background! If it was a clear day, you could see about a thousand feet up this mountain here before the trees would overtake it and you could only see the sky. With the fog laying it's thick blanket over the area though, you can't even see! I love getting to experience that, it's one of those small but incredibly interesting aspects of nature and how the planet works. Seasons are not what some places get which is unfortunate but it provides for opportunity to see and appreciate beauty when you can take a step back and look at it!

We took these pictures with our old Canon EOS with a Canon 50mm lens and I did a black and white algorithm in GIMP, which I am really enjoying how the pictures are turning out!

The smoky mountains must have really been so high at that time. I mean the smoke

Yeah that's for sure! These were 4,000 feet above sea level.

In winters when it rains like this, all these sights look so much more beautiful.

Beautiful!
I just imagined a few long exposure photos along the water and timelapses with fog and clouds moving...

Oh absolutely that would be amazing. I actually need to get better at the time lapse ones. I've tried a few times and they come out like shit lol. I don't know the secret yet! Ones I've tried come out waaaaaaaay over exposed from the shutter being open. I know I have a setting off in that situation lol

Yeah, long exposure needs practicing and some intuition, I'd say :) It's almost magical to get the first shot right, lol.
With regards to time-lapses, the most of the modern phones have that feature and some of the mirrorless cameras too ;)
