Picking Up The Needle

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to share a bit of a fun DIY project I had the other day!

Picking Up The Needle

It's not as often as I'd like that I get to do some fun DIY stuff, but it popped up the other day which was nice!

My son is your typical boy. He plays a lot, and he also ruins a lot lol. He goes through clothes a fair bit which is okay because he's just being a kid. Obviously there are limits there but not in this situation. One of the things that I'm surprised has lasted as long as it has was this kiddo's winter coat! This winter though.. the thing has met it's match.

It's not cheap to get coats these days that's for sure. I've been one to try and focus on spending less and saving more, which also means trying to repair what you've got so that you don't have to buy something just yet.

This has translated into a few things getting repairs. I did a shirt a few months ago, and it was the coat for this one. The little man loves to put random things in his pockets of his coat. This ultimately ended up being a sharp stick or something, whatever it was it popped the sewing that the coat had undergone to seal the pockets up. This wasn't that bad, except when you washed the coat.. it flung pieces of the inside everywhere!

I didn't realize the extent of the rip until one day I was looking to wash it so I checked to make sure there was nothing in his pockets. The holes in the damn thing were huge!! I knew it was for sure time to fix it because we've got a few months of cold weather left, so we are going to need the thing longer than it will last.

I unfortunately didn't have an exact match for the color of the inner pocket, but I used something that was pretty close so it wasn't THAT obvious that the coat was repaired. I don't think people would care, I just don't want one of the kids at his school to end up being a little shit and making fun of him.

It was fun doing a bit of sewing! I hadn't sewed anything to repair it in a while, so I was for sure entertained by doing it again. I am never one to shy away from doing a little bit of repairs, be it fixing a hole in the wall or sewing a pocket shut.

I wasn't too concerned with patterns or anything with this one because it was going inside the jacket pocket where nobody would really see it. I still wanted to make sure it was a decent job though! I doubled up on the string to hopefully give it enough strength to resist another few weeks. Thankfully it only took me about an hour to clean up all of the spots on the pocket so that you could barely notice it, and certainly wouldn't notice it unless you were looking at it very directly.

The little man was excited to get a fix for his jacket, but he was upset that I didn't let him help, oops!

Fixing winter coats has got to be worth it. I always keep mine for many years and wondered if I should get my crafty girls tp sew some warm pocket liners into my main coat. Is that a thing?

Otherwise, skills like this are awesome as you can kick them into action when needed once you know you can do them.

Hell yeah man! Getting some warm flannel pocket liners in the coats would be a great thing.

I love doing this type of stuff - it might not look perfect yet but with practice it'll get better! I actually sewed a hole in my sons school pants the other night, waiting to post those too.

The challenge with the jacket one was that it was badly frayed so it was hard to find what to hold onto with the needle lol
