Parent Inflation

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to chat a bit about the funny things that come with being a parent: parent inflation!

Parent Inflation

Now you're probably asking what the hell do I mean by Parent Inflation? Well for me, it's how things tend to increase their cost over time and we fall into the mental thought "it didn't cost that much when I was a kid!"

These things are amusing, in that it reminds me of the old notion from when we were kids how the older generation would say that they had to walk 10 miles in the snow to get to school, or they had no snow days and things like that. For me, my "old man statement" is how the hell did the tooth fairy get so damn expensive?!?

As the little kiddos get older, it's a time full of both joy as well as somber notions. They get older and mature which is good in some ways but we tend to miss the older and simpler days when they were fascinated by a lot more in the world and could do well with playing with a box or something for an hour. Part of that is when they start losing their baby teeth and start getting their adult teeth. It's a great time but boy is it sad in a lot of ways! They are shedding their child physique to start getting into their adult and more permanent body beginning with their teeth. It's certainly a memorable time, the teeth start popping like popcorn after a while.

The crazy thing about the teeth, at least in my household, is that it also comes with the tooth fairy. The tooth fairy itself has started to get freaking EXPENSIVE LOL. I remember when I was a kid getting a quarter for a tooth, maybe .50$. How much do teeth cost these days?! Well my son just lost another tooth the other day. That tooth cost us Five freaking dollars LOL I was like holy shit man?! I know it's not his first tooth, and he's lost a couple more but it makes me laugh that the tooth isn't 1$ or something but it ends up being 5$! I would have really enjoyed 5$ as a kid hahaha. Granted my parents didn't have a lot of money, not that we do but we have 1 kid where my parents had 3 so things were definitely different.

We don't mind though and we oblige it. We know that the tooth fairy isn't going to be something that lasts much longer, especially now that he's the age where he is going to school every day now. That makes it much more likely that the days of him believing in the tooth fairy and santa claus are likely numbered. In a lot of ways that's really sad but at the same time it does end up being a little nice, not having to figure out a way to make it believable as he gets more intelligent and older. We do really enjoy and try to foster as much as possible the child innocence factor, where they are allowed to appreciate and wonder at these things as long as humanly possible. The world is an ugly place in a lot of areas, so any time that we can provide him as much innocence as possible, we will guard that and try to make sure it lasts as long as it can!

I do think that even if he gets past the tooth fairy mentally we will still make him put his tooth under his pillow and give him money for it. My mom had a lot of issues but one of the things that I appreciate now that I'm older is that she continued these things even into my teenage years with giving us things from santa at Christmas even though we were well beyond that time, and I remember getting tooth fairy stuff still when I was well past those years. It gives us a little bit of a reminder that we are still a kid at heart! In reality I don't mind the parent inflation, but it's an amusing aspect of life as we get older, things get more expensive instead of less expensive!

I can completely agree with this. Now I have two children I’m always asking myself, I don’t think it cost me this much when I was younger or I didn’t have that when I was younger. All this technology especially that children are being brought up with is crazy!

Yeah for sure! We try to limit the tech we expose our son to but it's hard to do that all the time. We are doing the best we can but it's absolutely expensive. Good job raising two kids! One is a lot, two is amazing!

Things are becoming expensive each day
For example, the kids in my school pay $600 per term. That's a lot of money and I didn't spend up to that when I was little

Yeah that's crazy and it's a shame that things cost these crazy amounts these days.

Hmm, I feel the same thing. Just imagine when I bring my son to school with a bike or his father drives him to school by car. I told him I used to walk to school, alone. But he has the options to choose from, a bike, a white car, or a gray car. And also with the toys, all the kids or my kids are so spoiled with toys. I didn't have so many toys back then. XD

Haha yeah no kidding. We didn't have to walk but we did walk quite a bit when I was a kid. The toys the kids have these days are wild! I know I got a good amount when I was a kid and know that it wasn't easy on my dad being the only working parent but now I feel for him and the crazy situation he was in! My mom staying home herself also saved a significant amount of money as well, so I can't discount that. We've saved so much having my wife stay home with my son.

As my husband is the only person who earns, I really don't ask for anything expensive here. Indeed, inflation is real.
