Opportunity Costs

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk about some recent challenges - and the associated opportunity costs!

Opportunity Costs

Opportunity cost - we all may not be familiar with the term but we are familiar with the concept. It's when we do one thing but don't do another because of some various factors.

For my example - the opportunity cost I was doing recently was focusing on making sure I get Hive posts written and the engagement on the chain where I would like it to be while I was insanely busy at work. What I gave up during the last 2 months though was time that I would have normally done some exercising in the morning after I woke up. It's not the best thing to do but I was staying up a little bit later at night to make sure I covered the things that I wanted to do, and slept in in the morning, missing a bit of the exercise time.

I did offset the lack of exercise in a lot of ways though, because I ended up being so busy that I really couldn't eat a lot of food haha so it evened itself out! I was reflecting back on it though recently, and it was definitely an opportunity cost scenario. I know that there are plenty of ways that we can make tradeoffs and some are important while others not so much. I found that currently, keeping my brain engaged on Hive and the catharsis that I feel when I get to write numerous days a week, particularly during a very stressful time, was fairly important for me overall.

I know that there are definitely lots of important aspects of keeping an exercise regimen regardless of extenuating stressful circumstances and that they often assist in regulating them. I think if I am to encounter additional circumstances the way that I was for the last 2 months again in the future, I will be better equipped to handle them and also stay focused on doing some exercise to offset the other negative effects from not doing so.

Finding the right balance - that's what it's all about though, in a lot of ways. We have a lot of challenges in life, most of them remaining persistent from day to day but changing shape in the different ways. I think with my most recent professional challenges and things I was working with, it was a form that I was not accustomed to yet so I was fully dialed in and trying to manage it as best I could. I think it's like riding a bicycle though, when you first do it you have to focus all of your attention on every aspect of it so that you can improve your balance, muscle memory and those factors. Once you do it for a period, or a few times, then your body gets used to it and you're able to do other things as well such as looking at the things you are driving by without necessarily being close to crashing.

With the issue at work and my inability to balance doing that, household stuff and also maintaining my writing and engagement on Hive, I think it was me getting my body and mind into the right zone to deal with the challenges at work and those elements. If I'm put into that situation again, which is going to be likely given the nature of the professional world, I am going to make sure that I also figure out how to incorporate the physical elements as well.

Thankfully I wasn't a complete zombie though, as I said I was doing a lot of household work so I was moving about, cleaning and all that so that provided my exercise for the days however it was not the same as doing pushups, squats and all that which I would normally be doing.

As we get older, one of the things we realize is it's crucially important to not only exercise the mind, but to exercise the body just as well to ensure that we have a strong foundation to build on to maintain a semblance of a functional life!

This balance is what needs to be done, even though sometimes it feels difficult, a balance of work, rest and exercise is very important to enable the body and mind to work optimally.

In this life, one of the things I will say I believe in is the fact that there are a lot of challenges we faced that helps us shape us to a more better person
