Old School, New Age
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share a bit of a fun recent experience I had!

Old School, New Age
Every now and then we see something that really brings back some memories!
The other day I was at the grocery store with my son as we often are on the weekends, and there was something that happened towards the end that really just blew me back a few decades! LOL
When we were at the end of the trip, we hit the check out and chose the lane as normal, one that's a decent mixture between a medium cart or a short line. Some people always try to go to the 12 items or 18 items or less, whatever it is, and end up waiting longer than I do when I find a normal line. SUCKERS LOL
The lady in front of us, who was maybe in her early or mid 50's, so not THAT old, was looking at the amount they rang up and all of a sudden whips out a fucking check. Who the hell pays for things with a check besides rent anymore?! LOL I was flabbergasted!
My son didn't notice it, but I was pretty surprised, mainly because I haven't seen anyone in years use a check, nevermind someone that wasn't 100 years old and one foot in the grave lol. Thankfully this grocery store is cool, and obviously they have some arrangement still that customers can pay for food with checks, because damn that was a wild sight.
I used to work at a grocery store many years ago, and people would certainly pay with checks then and we thought it was weird, but in 2025 someone is paying with a check? Fuck yeah, you go lady! LOL stick it to the man!
In the days of instant gratification and shit like that, it's always nice to see something that is a bit of a slower pace, such as writing a check to pay for food. Granted I understand the risk of that, and have since I was starting to work at the grocery store, but at the same time it IS money, and the chances that someone is paying for groceries with a check is going to bounce that check are likely slim these days.. back then? sure, happened all the time! LOL
I'm also surprised that the cashier, who looked like she was 17 or 18, even knew what to do with the check. Thankfully it seems this place still trains their staff on what to do with a check, because it's one of those things that you should know how to do in case it ever happens. I think a lot of places aren't doing that type of "just in case" training these much anymore. I don't know if it's because there is a lot of turnover at places for employment or what, but it was a bit a nice refresher in the world.
What about you, have you seen someone use something pretty oldschool in terms of technology, but still keeping it alive in the year 2025? Let me know in the comments!

Oh man, that takes me back! 😂 I thought that checks have pretty much become extinct because no one will take them anymore, they're too easy to forge, etc.
It reminds me of the old credit card process, I was too young for it, what was it? They would swipe your card through some machine and it would print onto a piece of paper?? 😄
You're absolutely right about instant gratification, though. Sometimes I get nostalgic for the slower, simpler ways of life; like snail mail 🥰 Not much in the ways of old technology, but I've been seeing a ton of old cars around! Vintage, really nice to see...
Yeah it makes me laugh to think of old ways like the credit card swiper things! You only see those in movies now LOL. It was a blast from the past to see a regular check though!
I for sure long for simpler times, where we got to slow down and enjoy things. I wonder if that's how our parents felt, looking back to when they were kids versus when they had us and were older? It's an interesting thought experiment!
How old was the person that was writing the check? I bet they were old right? They may as well have sent their payment over via fax machine. I can't remember the last time I wrote a check...
Hahaha they weren't THAT old, I think in their mid 50's or so. It was really funny!
I write checks regularly, but only because the recipient company pisses me off so I make them go to the extra effort as frequently as possible LOL
Fair play!
Also.. I wanted to ask, how do you use Archive.org to play oldschool games? Do you download the ZIP and install it on your computer? Is that sketchy? Seems like it lol but I guess lots of people would flag a sketchy download.
I finally finished Wolfenstein and want to move over to Doom!
No, you should be able to play right inside of your browser via emulation.

Then just click play I think.
Ah, I saw the "shareware" thing and it didn't do anything for me before lol but thanks that worked!
I'm glad you got it working. There are a ton of great games and walks down memory lane there.
