Old and Tired
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to chat a little bit about aging technology, and the reluctance to replace it!

Old and Tired
We all have things that we use and try to extend!
These days, it's all about stretching the money that we have.. in so many ways!
I've got a few things that I use that are quite ..mature to say. Some of the pieces of technology that I use and keep are unfortunately ancient by today's standards, and it's a good thing, but at the same time it's not!
Some of the things that we need to keep up with these days are pretty tedious, in that we have a lot of technological changes that are constantly happening for simply no other reason than to make people spend money. To always have "the next best thing" which is a load of horse shit. It causes a lot of problems otherwise to constantly need to be spending money just to stay up to date. At the same time, this constant update does bring some great benefits because things are evolving and growing better at a pretty considerable rate, when you think of historical references.
I know I need to update some of the things that I use, but at the same time I also have a hard time choosing what to update it to which I know many people are in the same boat. It's always a good thing to have lots of options, and that's the nature of what a free-market economy is all about. We aren't pigeon-holed into ONE thing or another, though it may seem like it to the average person, we really aren't. There are so many choices out there, it's remarkable!
I have been researching for a while now some of the things I need to update, and trying to get to the updated platform that I need to be is going to likely be the need in the next few months, for the simple fact that the technology is sadly getting far less capable of keeping up with the demands that I am putting on it. I try to be delicate as I can be.. but sadly we aren't perfect!
I was using one of the older devices the other day and holy shit batman, the thing was depressing and slow. This coming from someone who remembers the dial-up internet days LOL I was dismayed because it meant that I needed to speed up my timeline of purchasing what I needed.
For me, not all is lost though. I am annoyed about the upgrades but at the same time, I also can relish the fact that I still have the offline things that some people don't, such as my original PS3 with all of the games. I can play that, enjoying the fact that I don't have to do any upgrades to it unless something dies out on me, but the hardware of old like that is built reliably enough that we can use them for many years afterwards. I think the trick is finding products that will stand the test of time, in a time where things are as disposable as paper cups!
What about you, do you try to keep things as long as possible so you don't spend money? Let me know in the comments!

😂I have a hooded rain jacket that is 40 years old. I'm going to feel really bad when that thing is too raggedy to wear. My husband usually replaces my wallets and pocketbooks because in his opinion they have outlived their useful lives.
I buy stuff when I need it, but am never in a hurry to replace an item that is still useful. It's about money, and it's about waste.
Yeah for sure! I've got shirts that are over a decade old. My wool socks are 20 years old! Fuck it I don't need new ones unless these are unusable lol. I'm glad you're sensible and keep stuff for a long time! There too much of a disposable mentality today I think.
I love the beautiful colors you manage to capture in your photographs. I congratulate you for your work and thank you for sharing them in the community.
Hmm there's always this conspiracy theory that if things were made to last, then the companies would probably have to close down. So most of them will just outlast their warranty period. Oh well. For me, I think one category of stuff that I use as long as possible would probably be clothes. As long as I can fit in, and it's just for day to day activities (and not some formal function), I think it's fine even if they might lose a little colour.
I really liked your article. Although it is true that technology needs to be updated at times, the durability and reliability of old devices are invaluable.
Every time lol. If it doesn't break and is still functional to do the basics, I don't bother replacing a piece of tech. But it does also seem that manufactures purposely design some of these tech devices to start malfunctioning even when the hardware is still pretty okay.
