Locomotive Monochrome Monday
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share some photos that I took a few years ago of a train we rode up the side of a mountain!
Locomotive Monochrome Monday
Trains are absolutely one of my favorite things. There is something so incredibly unique and interesting about them! The mechanical nature of them is just really raw and industrial. There are modern trains that are a little annoying, but can be beautiful as well such as the bullet trains in Europe or Japan. I'm more of a fan of locomotives though, the oldschool trains!
A few years ago we went to a mountain that is relatively nearby, and one of the important tourist attractions of it is that it's got a train that goes up the side of the mountain and it's pretty wild! I think it was definitely my favorite train ride I've been on, because it felt like I was going back a hundred years or more which was really cool!
The train itself is pretty amazing. It was originally built in the late 1800's and is one of the oldest running trains in the world that are the cog type. The cog means that the train moves but it goes on a track with the wheels as most do, but the big difference is the cog in the middle. There is a track that goes in the middle as well and this track is like a ratchet tool, where it goes forward and prevents it from going backward until the time is right and they reverse the direction once they reach their destination. It was really amazing stuff, because it was so revolutionary when it was invented!
The amazing thing about it as well is that this is the same engine that is running this that was built in the late 1800's. It is a steam engine, and coal fired. They have made repairs to it of course, but the metal housing of the whole thing is the SAME as it was, and the original equipment! That's some fucking lasting technology, let me tell you! I don't know of a machine that has lasted that long, which is wild!
Taking photos of it was absolutely really cool and interesting. We were able to capture quite a few of them, but I think turning them into black and white really turns it into something special. The black and white look of the pictures, especially the train gears and steam above was amazing. I need to go back and look through those photos again to see how many other ones I've got to flip into black and white.
I absolutely appreciate the time we live in, technologically, and would never wish to go back because that would cause a lot of death and destruction however I do marvel at how things have evolved since then and how much technology has grown. It is wonderful to see old examples of what people used to do, and how it reminds us of where we came from. A lot of people don't get that reminder and it's a shame. History is crucial!

So cool to see such a vintage train still in use! I'm a fan of the coal era as well, your set with the mountain reminded me of an abandoned town we came across while in Alberta. They were a coal mining town, so when the industry died, so did the town... So again, very nice to see it in use 👍
(I know this is monochrome, but was the train red!? 😭🚂)
Also funny you brought up the bullet trains, my husband and I were just talking about it the other day 😂 Top speeds of like 200mph or something!? And he told me it's all powered by magnets. Amazing!
The train is a little multicolored but red is a part of it! I dug up some of the photos, I actually only had them in black and white at the moment haha.
My wife and I were on a bullet train when we were in Italy it was crazy. It went 300 kph, or 160 in freedom units :D
The train looks gorgeous, as does the scenery... Thank you for sharing. It brings back the drive for adventure! 😃
I’ve seen pictures of the train in Europe and Japan
They are so unbelievable and very beautiful
Your pictures of these trains are very nice
Looks absolutely incredible. It's impossible to get the same quality of metal back then, right now. However I do agree that I wouldn't trade the past for the present we currently have as it would make no sense at all. Absolute beautiful piece of tech
