Less Management Trials

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk about a new concept that I read the other day: far less management at some companies!

Less Management Trials

There's a new concept in some of the big companies of the world, namely tech companies. One where there is less middle management and more employees, but it is a group of people that can determine their best path forward. Will it work?

I think one of the most challenging things of the world we live in today is what many call the "managerial class". This is a concept that I've not really heard of until recently, but it makes total sense! There is SO MUCH middle management at all levels of companies and government that it's become obscene. People can hardly work and think for themselves, they've got someone above them that is dictating their work.

The managerial class, in so many ways, has become a cancer upon the job and governmental industry. They are obviously concerned with their livelihoods but aren't necessarily contributing a whole lot themselves, so they have to ensure their survival and continuity. How do they do it? By creating more and more barriers, and more middle management. It's pretty insidious, especially when it comes to government. If you really think about it, nobody in the public eye of government makes any decisions for themselves, or very rarely. They have a team of "people" who do it for them and it becomes this obscene and disgusting bloat. It really needs to go!

I know that I've talked about lately where I know that I need to get into the mindset of leading instead of just being a worker but this new strategy that some companies are trying, has me thinking a little differently in a way. I forget which company it is exactly but it was one of the major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Oracle and some others. They are eliminating a LOT of middle management positions in favor of people who are the backbone of an organization: the workers. I think this is a sound strategy in a lot of ways.

This certainly reduces the overhead cost that a company has between what they are producing and what they are paying their staff. Will it lead to increased salaries for workers? Unlikely.. but it's a concept that I would like to see proliferate in other sectors of the industry, especially in government.

What this does, and may be the golden age for this to occur, is it groups a bunch of people together on a team like they normally would. The big difference is they don't have a "manager" like many teams do now, instead of they all share a part in their own work efforts to lead to a common goal.

In some ways this can sound a little sketchy, they are not calling or paying somebody to be a manager, but you can likely bet that there is somebody on the team that is the "lead" who does the reporting and other duties of a manager but likely does not get paid a manager salary. I think this is the first phase of it though, where people still need somebody to tell them what to do. I am hoping that with the advent of this type of model, we can get it to expand and then people will be less dependent on others telling them what to do and when, and more people working independently towards a goal, whatever that may be.

I wish I had the article to link, I did a quick search for it but the results were hopeless and definitely not the original article I read. It sounds like a promising change that favors efficiency over bureaucracy which is always a good thing! What has yet to be seen is if other big companies are going to give this experiment a try and if it will proliferate to other companies that have less ability to be flexible. With the advent of remote work and people pushing for it from the hiring level, I think that this could take hold and really benefit people in the long run!

I agree with that, no to mention the amount of people in the govermental system here ib my country, and not all of them are working well.
Hope it can really be implemented well, at least some ofthe money for their salary, can be alocated to the staff, the first line of worker.

Yeah I think it’s important to reduce staff in a lot of areas! It would be good to then create more companies so there’s more competition which is an important way to help drive innovation.

I doubt it will lead to raised for the employees who remain but it would certainly be nice to see!

Most government officials are managed in such a way that you can tell the person isn't saying or doing what he/she wants to do but what others what him/her to say or do. I always wondered who pays all these team of managers to present a well-crafted image of a person to the world.

I think this new model can be an efficient or effective way to get work done, the reigns are loosened a bit and workers can operate more outside the box and bring their own individuality into the picture.

Yeah governments are one of the most unnecessary and bloated organizations in the world. The employee count of the US federal government I believe is at 2 million which is asinine. It needs to be 500k or less in my opinion! Thankfully this trend is starting at companies where they are able to move in a better speed than the behemoth government is. We shall see how effective it is!

The governmental organization is not doing well in my country. They make decisions which is normal but not favorable decisions and it is affecting the lives of the masses…
