Historical Italy Walk

Italy.. one of the most beautiful and iconic countries in the world. I know there are lots of other beautiful countries like Croatia and likely a significant list of others, but Italy has been a centerpoint for many people for many decades. The food, wine, scenery, people and culture are all beautiful and some of the best parts of humanity.

My wife and I were lucky enough to travel there many years ago, and I wanted to take a look back at some pictures from the trip to celebrate a Wednesday Walk this week! We've been plagued with sickness over the past few weeks, so I haven't gotten out exploring with my son in sadly too long but hopefully we are on the mend and will be out in short order to do some exploration! Because we've not been out, I dipped into the thousands of old pictures that we've got stored and grabbed some good ones to share with folks! I might do a couple posts on this theme, not sure yet but let's kick it off!

We spent the majority of our time in the Tuscany region of Italy, definitely one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Almost in the center of the whole thing, it's wine country as we all know and it's got such beautiful views and vistas everywhere. You are driving or walking, and on both sides of you are amazing panoramas! There are thousands of vines lining the hills, lots of olive groves and an incredible amount of food and life just everywhere. We got to spend an entire day exploring the countryside and this post here I will focus on the beautiful views that we were experiencing!

I loved seeing the incredible olive groves, which you can see on the right side of the picture there, lining the rolling hills everywhere. The olives are one of my favorite aspects of the country and culture, because they are so versatile and healthy! I know that wine is definitely another important part of it but the olive oil is something I've really struggled with getting to re-taste the amazing stuff we got to there, when we are here in America. I would love to eventually own some olive groves myself, that would be so cool!

There was an ancient monastery, which isn't surprising as there are ancient things all over the darn country. That is my wife standing there, five foot something, compared to not only the gigantic Cypress tree that Italy is so famous for, but the church itself. The thing was freaking TALL lol. We were shocked to see this gigantic place in the middle of the countryside but people around here don't mess around with their religion. They take it seriously! I know we spent some time in a crazy amount of churches when we were there, and it was beautiful for sure. We've got a number of great souvenirs from it, maybe I'll take those out for a future post but this was definitely an incredible place to see.

I think my favorite view of all for the day - seeing the wide open expanse from the top of a hill. This was such an incredible spot and place to take a picture! We took a number of selfies, which isn't unexpected but we were really happy that there wasn't a whole gaggle of people hogging up the area and trying to take the same damn thing. We had a small tour bus of people, so we each got a turn and it was really nice.

The view here is just unbelievable. Miles upon miles of beautiful and productive countryside. Farms everywhere, ancient land and ancient families. It was such a powerful feeling to stand here, where Roman soldiers once stood thousands of years ago. Who knows how many people stood here between now and then, but damn! It's incredible to stand there and reflect for a little bit on the sheer magnitude of what we are seeing, and how long it's been around. The memories made here, both good and bad, are really something special.

Hopefully you enjoyed the little bit of a scenic trip that I took down memory lane in Tuscany, I might be doing this again next week, it depends on how things shake out!

just the same with me when I see something ancient - I start to think "how many events this place saw...how many people visited it during its long centuries"...
