Discontinuing Your Choices

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk about how annoying it is for some companies to discontinue things, making us have to find an alternate!

Discontinuing Your Choices

Discontinuing products, or ones that are similar to others they produced, is really annoying!

I get that things change.. tastes evolve and adjustments are made. What is annoying though is when companies will put out a product line and then make changes to that line even though it's actually a pretty decent one, and it looks different. The funny thing too is that I work on the company side, so I completely understand the need to make changes to product lines and things like that. It just sucks when you're a victim of that change!

What am I referring to here? Ceiling fans! LOL. You know you're old when you are shopping for, and complaining about, ceiling fans :D.

We decided that we need to install a couple ceiling fans in our place, as it helps a lot with summers and warmer weather, and even on the random days in the off season when we get a hot patch but don't necessarily want to turn on the air conditioning. The ceiling fans also come with a light, which we sadly don't have on the ceiling.. which is absolutely asinine in my opinion but that's a rant for another day. The light is one thing that I've been sorely looking forward to for a long time!

We installed a fan in our living room years ago, but made the unfortunate mistake of not getting it installed in both of the bedrooms while we were doing it. Damn did we pay for that mistake LOL the freaking fan that we bought downstairs is no longer sold! Fuckers!

IMG_0787.jpeg

It's not a huuuuuuge issue to have fans that are a little bit different but it goes back to that annoying thing: resale value. If you have a wild mixture of formats and shit on the things in your place, people will really dislike it and you will get some pushback. I guess in the ridiculous markets that are around right now it's not as much of an issue, but for normal times, if you've got a bunch of different fan styles and light styles going around, that's a detractor for buyers.

The crazy thing as well: I couldn't get the things off the company's website! They have a website for sure, but it's mainly troubleshooting and shit, not selling any of their products which is incredibly strange. You'd think that a company would love to sell direct to consumers instead of being tied into a relationship with stores and stuff. I was incredibly surprised on that end, but maybe if I locate the model number I can contact them and see if I can purchase one directly that way, but they can't advertise it? Really strange..

We are likely going to end up going with a similar color fan, but what annoys me is that the light is completely different than the one we've got in the downstairs area. I'm not a big pain, but when it comes to consistency for these things, I do prefer to have one thing throughout instead of a mix-match hodge-podge type stuff. We will see what we end up getting, I've looked online a bunch at the local hardware stores and found some that appear acceptable, but that hasn't gone through the wife-test yet to see if she agrees :D.

What about you, do you find it annoying when companies do this, discontinuing products that don't seem to have any issues with it? Let me know in the comments!

I feel your frustration! It’s always annoying when companies discontinue products you like, especially when it messes with the consistency of your home’s aesthetics. Hopefully, you find a suitable ceiling fan that passes the wife-test and blends well with the rest of your decor. Good luck!👊

Yeah it's annoying lol spent the last few days filtering the ones I don’t think we would take and narrowed it down. Let’s see what the wife thinks of the choices!

My wife was just complaining the other day about some restaurant taking some pastry ball or some shit off the menu. She was saying that was the only reason she and her friends went to that place, and was complaining as to why the hell a business would cut out a popular menu item…I sound like a bad listener…not one solid f*ckin detail in there 🤣

Anyway, it’s a much smaller example but same concept. I also see the other side though. I work for a company that acts as sub supplier to various larger manufacturers, such as Ford and Caterpillar. I wish we would hurry up and cut the Ford line. We only sell piddly amounts of these air valve controllers, they haven’t been used in a vehicle design since like the 90’s, but we keep the line alive to maintain our automotive certification and to support old legacy vehicle repairs…both of which I get, but the line is old as shit, the testers (which I have to maintain) are these dirt friggin old ass computers that are always under threat of death, and just in general a real pain in the ass to keep resuscitating for a line that brings in almost zero revenue…we might actually lose money on these things to be honest, but that certification is required in order to bid on future automotive contracts.

Anyway, that’s a bit all over the place but yeah, I totally get the frustration. Same issue I’ve had in the past with tiles and counter tops. We might sound a bit crotchety with the cliched old “why can’t things just stay the way they were” stance, but I do get it…that tile business had me mad as hell - I had to redo piping behind a tiled shower, and chipped a few while I was pulling them. Wound up having to do some ceramic repair since I couldn’t buy a box of equivalent replacements anywhere.

As far as the fan goes, you might be able to link up with someone who does contracting or flips houses…there’s always a chance the same style fan might be getting pulled from another home, in which case you could probably let snag it up cheap or even for free - my dad has used that trick a time or two with surprising success :)

Hahaha yeah I hear you on the pastry ball thing. It's like ok, I get it that sucks it's gone but it's far less of an impact on me than it is you so it goes in one ear and out the other LOL. High level details - pastry ball gone, women mad, ok got the important parts of the story. Can't win them all man! Lol!

On the product line for work - yeah that's annoying as hell but at the same time I get it. It's important for some companies to keep access to things like that, as frustrating as it is. Sadly sometimes others don't realize the crap that goes into those things to realize maybe they should nix that shit and save resources and energy elsewhere. Buuuut also, if they were to try and get into the automotive game with something new these days, it would likely cost them many hundreds of thousands of dollars in bullshit software fees, hardware and all that before building the necessary stuff to manufacture the thing. So it's probably a lot cheaper to keep that dinosaur alive. We know companies these days love to make things obscenely expensive to get into the game so they can try to shut out competition. Fuckers.

I hear your frustration for finding your favourite product discontinued. Personally I wouldn't be bothered about the inconsistency across rooms as I think each room should have its own look and feel and character.

I even have two different lights in my dining room, the left is above my dining table and the right is at the other end of the room which is a little seating area by the patio doors. I find it helps to zone the house. Anyone, it's just my personal preference, hopefully you'll find something that will match with your existing ceiling fan

Haha yeah I do like the personality of the different lights. If we actually cared about the place we live in - we may do something like that but this place is just an inexpensive place to live right now, with plans to sell it once we find the right place elsewhere. We are doing things to maximize the possibility of a smooth sale and I think consistency on ceiling fans is probably a good one. They aren’t our favorite ones, they just are the same look as the one we have so we don’t have to buy 3 fans, and only buy 2 lol

Those are some cool lights you’ve got though :D

It can be frustrating to discontinue some products but I feel there are reasons they do that. They can’t just do it for no reason. I feel it would not make sense to be earning from something and just decide to stop making it
Is that ever possible?

Yeah I’m sure there was a reason, I’m not close enough to it to figure it out but it’s annoying haha

I do get it...
Such minor inconveniences are crazy...

In my country, most things are imported so the market is changing frequently.
You might be able to snag a ceiling fan this year, love how it is and the price and shit.
Next year, maybe you'd want to change ceiling fans in the other rooms and see that those fans of last year are long gone.
Or you're being served with the fake/subpar versions...

Yeah I feel for that issue, it makes it difficult to determine what to do. Normally I would buy the necessary things up front but we didn’t realize we should have done it that way. We do now!

Sometimes buying up front is still rather impossible.
In event that one of the devices develope a fault later on in time...

We'd still be faced with the same issues in the market😂😞
