Disc Golf Course Walking
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share a few photos from the little man and I's recent past time discovery: disc golf!

Disc Golf Course Walking
Disc golf is apparently a pretty popular thing.. who knew?! Certainly not us LOL.
The little man and I discovered disc golf last year. There is a park on the way home from one of our favorite places that we go to, but we never stopped in despite seeing it fairly often. One day I said fuck it, let's give it a whirl and see what it's all about! When we got into the grassy area there were a bunch of dudes throwing frisbees around but they were different. Then some weird metallic sound happened and I was confused. What the hell happened? We asked them a few questions and realized that there was apparently a fairly popular sport called disc golf. What rock was I living under?!
We went on our merry way, walking around the park, which happened to be a beautiful place that's for sure. What I think I really enjoy about this disc golf thing is that it's got beautiful scenery to explore! We were planning on doing a little walking but we got a whole lot more for the bargain. I think that's what I like the most about it, besides it being a really fun hobby, or sport. I'm not sure what it's considered as, could it be a sport in the sense of the word? I guess?
At any rate though, the ability to be out in the woods, walking around and throwing things for points is pretty fun! We got to do a lot of hiking, and I think this would likely be a really fun sport to do in the autumn and wintertime when there isn't snow on the ground. It's really nice in the summertime, but the bugs make it a bit less enjoyable, sadly.
Just like regular golf, there are pars for the different tees. You have to get it from the initial platform into the net with a specific number of throws to be on course. We haven't graduated to actually doing that type of stuff yet, so we are still ignoring it. It's cool to see the other people though that are far better at it than we are, getting to the net on the right amount of throws or less. I haven't seen anyone get a hole-in-one yet, besides my son from his vantage point. He was standing about 15 feet away from one and nailed a hole-in-one which was awesome for him! He was wicked excited to nail that one.
Walking amongst the trees in the forest is possibly my favorite part. I love to go hiking with my son, but he's a bit more active these days and a hike isn't exactly what he's interested in anymore. He wants to be out doing something, so finding Disc Golf was a really special opportunity for the both of us. I get to be outside in the woods where I belong, and he gets to be there with me exploring and having fun. There is a decent learning curve with it as well, and my son is getting the hang of it. He still has his challenges with it, and gets frustrated but he's far more of a perfectionist than I am lol so he gets those things intensely when he doesn't make a perfect shot each time.
The crazy thing about it as well is how far the courses are! These things are hundreds of feet, and for example you have to throw it over this ravine in the below picture. That's wild stuff, and definitely not something that we have participated in yet. I can imagine me throwing one of the discs and losing it in the brush somewhere below haha. We completely skip over these giant ones initial platforms and go a lot closer to the end of it because we don't want to lose them.
I think that it's going to be fun because apparently disc golf is much more popular than I realized. There are hundreds of courses within a few hours drive of us, which was completely surprising to me. This also gives us a whole lot of places to explore which is awesome! Granted not all of the courses are free, but that's okay. We find the free ones are the best for us right now, given that we are absolutely newbies at the game. Investing in the discs is also not cheap, some of them cost 10$ a piece! Pretty wild haha but it's a lot of fun.
What about you, have you ever heard of disc golf? Do you play it? If not, would you consider it? Let me know in the comments!

Hell yeah. #GimpGolf
Might be a good thing for you to give a try, take the pup with you. Not sure if it would just grab the discs thinking they are toys though.
Funny. You were just in my comment section on the one where I talk about disc golf—GimpGolf. Skimmer!
Hahaha oh shit I definitely skimmed past that one.. I see it now though!
That's badass, I'm glad you partake in it too! We've been 3 times so far and it's so much fun
We love it. A little hot right now for Atlas, she didn't go last month, probably same this month. Here in the Appalachians, the courses are everywhere—stunning. Haven't been to one yet that doesn't have at least one tee throwing over a river or something. Mako is a real nice mid-range.
Yeah dude I can imagine it's probably beautiful! We have around 100 courses in our state, 80 in the neighboring state and probably similar in the other 2 states that I haven't even looked at. It's fucking badass!
I have no real idea about the discs yet.. but I know there are all different kinds. We got a clearance basic kit from Hobby Lobby, with a side of Jesus, and we are using that so far. It was awesome though, one guy was really nice and gave my son one of his discs when we told him it was our first day ever doing it. Gotta love little gestures like that!
It looks more intersting than ordinary golf, and I like those woods! I can't believe how big your little dude is getting, and I sure love how you get him out in nature alot and always have. It'll stand him in good stead when he gets older - nature and hiking will always be a place of good memories and retreat and comfort to him.
Yeah this version of golf is way cooler haha. It's great exercise walking all around and we get to explore a lot more areas we normally wouldn't venture to!
Ugh it's crazy how big he's getting! I was just deleting old photos that were useless and found a bunch of him when he was a little tacker it's sad to look back at it 😭😭.
He's at the 97% for height for his age group, kid is going to be gigantic when he gets to be a teenager lol
I don't play but my youngest son has. It is something I wouldn't mind doing, but I would need an easier course that is rather flat, especially to start.
@bozz plays disc golf a lot and is probably a good source of info if you need any.
Yeah that's the cool thing about the sport there's all kinds of courses. Bozz played in a wide open field the other day which is cool. Hopefully you are able to find a nice flat open one to play with your son!
Yeah, he was playing in COlorado on his trip out there. As for my son I would like to, if we can find one.
Golf is really popular in other countries but not here
You rarely see people who play Golf in Nigeria and that’s why it sometimes look boring to me😁😁
Yeah I'm not a fan to traditional golf. This one is cooler!
It's the first time I'm hearing about disc golf and I'll definitely consider trying it out, especially with a scenery such as the woods. Being in nature and engaging in activities is a great combo :)
Yeah it's a lot of fun for sure and it's great exercise as well as being outside. The discs are a little on the pricey side but you can get a lot off Amazon for cheaper which is good.
I have seen a few people sharing about disc golf so I had heard of it but have never tried it
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)
Yeah it's a lot of fun and it's great exercise! We ran into a pair of couples they were in their 60's and loved disc golf because it was low impact, great exercise walking in the woods and a lot of fun. You should look into it for some exercise!
I saw you were in the hospital recently sorry to hear that man! I was wondering what happened to you but kept forgetting to check until the other day. Hopefully you can stay out of there and be well!
I may well tey it someday :)
I was having lot sof polyps on my colonoscopies so they diud a generic test and I had a gene making me at veyr high risk like 98% of geting colon cancer so they took out most of my colon, a big surgery andi had some complications so ended up in hospital for over a month, but well on the mend now
Believe it or not there is actually a disc golf community here on HIVE. It isn't super active, but there are some posts in it.
That's awesome I had no idea but I'll be dropping content in there! Thanks
No problem. I think my wife and I are going to hit a new course tomorrow. I love visiting new places and discovering new areas.
