Derby Season Arrives

It's that time of year.. fishing derby season!

It's that time of year, one of my sons favorite times where we are hitting up the fishing derby's! Fishing derby's are a great, and free event, to have with the kids and the family. A lot of the sports clubs will host them for the kids and families to come and spend a few hours, sign up and partake in a classic American past-time: fishing!

Fishing has for sure been one of my sons favorite activities since he was very little. He started fishing at a pretty young age, but he has loved it the whole time. The thrill of landing a fish is really exciting, even if that's a bunch of sunfish or something. The suspense of a waiting for a fish to bite and then the fight with them is a lot of fun!

I think one of my favorite aspects of fishing derby season is that it gives us something to do and look forward to during the weekends in the odd time between winter and summer. I know Spring is a beautiful season, but it's filled with a lot of rain and that means it's also filled with a lot of time doing things we may not want to be doing such as cleaning or something. When there is a fishing derby though, they are rain or shine!

We have slowly been making improvements to our strategies for the derby's and we have packed more and better gear each time. This year it was as you would expect: raining. It was actually pouring raining out, which was a challenge. Turns out, our rain gear isn't THAT waterproof sadly.. so that was a big challenge! We thankfully packed a lot of things like umbrellas, extra clothes and stuff since consistent rain was in the forecast.

This year, our favorite derby was the first one which was nice. They give almost all of the kids prizes which is nice, so that the kids feel they won something even if they didn't catch the biggest fish, the most fish etc. so it was definitely marked on our calendar as a repeat event yearly. The little man ended up catching 3 trout!

One of the fun things about the whole ordeal is how we have to constantly improve and get our things better. For example.. sadly this year I made the mistake of getting rid of the fishing net that was in the trunk of the car LOL oops.. I think it was half-broken but it was still a net. That would've come in handy for some of the fights the little man had! Thankfully we didn't lose any fish, but it was certainly a moment where I cursed myself for throwing it away hahaha.

Overall, it was a great event and the little man is getting back into the fishing spirit. We will be going to the next few fishing derby's over the coming weeks and hopefully lining up a prize or two! I would love if the little man was able to land a trophy in one of them, because he does do a pretty good job at catching the things!

Although this picture below wasn't taken from this derby, this is the type of fish we were catching! It's a much better picture than the one I have above lol one of these days we are going to keep one and eat it! There were a bunch of family's taking the trout home, and I didn't realize it until too late. I would've given them the 3 trout we caught but they won't go to waste. Something will eat them, be it another trout, turtles or the eagles that were flying above during the fishing. Nothing will go to waste!

Looks like an awesome time! I thought this was going to be about horses! We just had a walleye festival in the town near where I live. It looked like it was really well attended.

Hahah yeah, different kind of derby :D

Walleye is one of the fish I've never caught. Where we go is a little too far south for those ones! If I go to Northern Vermont or Maine I can likely catch them but where I'm at now, no dice. One day though!

It's a lot of fun when the events have plenty of people. It gives me hope that we aren't falling into the abyss when I see lots of families out here to show their kids some fun and do some fishing!

I prefer perch, but bass fishing is fun too.
