HIT ME HARD AND SOFT (Album Review) [eng-esp]

It will soon be one month since Billie Eilish released her 3rd album "HIT ME HARD AND SOFT" and during all this time it has been a musical proposal that has accompanied all my days. To honor that, I would like to share my opinion about this piece.

Pronto se cumplirá un mes desde que Billie Eilish lanzó su 3er álbum "HIT ME HARD AND SOFT" y durante todo este tiempo ha sido una propuesta musical que ha acompañado todos mis días. Para honrar eso, quisiera compartir mi parecer acerca de esta pieza.

To introduce we have "SKINNY", a song that according to Billie and her brother Finneas, was the first one they managed to finish of the whole album, and they barely agreed that it was that one that should give the opening. SKINNY revolves around a romantic relationship and how it has affected her life due to her own insecurities and social pressures. It's not the first time Billie has talked about these topics in her music, and the guitar accompaniment and then the string instrumental makes the song have a solemn tone. Yes, this song deserved to break the ice.

Para introducir tenemos "SKINNY", canción que según Billie y su hermano Finneas, fue la primera que lograron terminar de todo el álbum, y apenas estuvo coincidieron en que era esa la que debía dar la apertura. SKINNY gira alrededor de una relación amorosa y cómo esta ha incidido en su vida debido a sus propias inseguridades y las presiones sociales. No es la primera vez que Billie habla de estos temas en su música, y el acompañamiento de la guitarra y luego el instrumental de cuerdas hace que la canción tenga un tono solemne. Sí, esta canción merecía romper el hielo.

Next we have LUNCH, a song that since it came out has become an anthem for the LGBTIQ+ community. The reason is because of the unbridled and daring way in which the artist dares to talk about her sexual desire for another girl. Coming also behind a song with a nostalgic air makes a contrast that she knew how to take advantage of, because the tone is funny and jovial, typical of a first contact with this side of her sexuality.

A continuación tenemos LUNCH, canción que desde que salió se ha convertido en un himno para la comunidad LGBTIQ+. La razón es por la manera desenfrenada y atrevida en la que la artista se atreve a hablar de su deseo sexual por otra chica. Al venir además detrás de una canción con un aire nostálgico hace un contraste que supo aprovecharse, porque el tono es divertido y jovial, propio de un primer contacto con este lado de su sexualidad.

One title that caught my attention a lot was CHIHIRO, because of the clear reference to the film by the Japanese animation studio Ghibli (which Billie later took care of confirming the great influence it had on her childhood). And certainly the song gives us the vibe of being in a dream world while she talks about her disagreements in a failed relationship, plaguing the lyrics with phrases like "Open up the Door", which in the appropriate context allow for total ambiguity.

Un título que llamó mucho mi atención fue CHIHIRO, por la clara referencia a la película del estudio de animación japonés Ghibli (que luego Billie se encargó de confirmar la gran influencia que tuvo en su niñez). Y ciertamente la canción nos da la vibra de estar en un mundo de ensueño mientras habla de sus desavenencias en una relación fallida, plagando la letra de frases como "Abre la puerta", que en el contexto apropiado permiten una total ambigüedad.

The first time I heard BIRDS OF A FEATHER was in the snippet published by the official Netflix account in which they confirmed that the song would be part of the official tracklist for the HEARTSTOPPER series in its 3rd season. Once I listened to the song completely I could understand the nexus. Birds of a Feather tells of a pure and unconditional love, with a promise to last until death. The latter is confessed with a clarity that could become disturbing: "I want you to stay 'til I'm in the grave." Even so, the sweetness of Billie's voice allows us to take the whole panorama as one of the most beautiful love songs performed by the singer.

La primera vez que escuché BIRDS OF A FEATHER fue en el snippet publicado por la cuenta oficial de Netflix en el que confirmaban que la canción sería parte del tracklist oficial para la serie HEARTSTOPPER en su 3era temporada. Una vez escuché la canción por completo pude entender el nexo. Birds of a feather habla de un amor puro e incondicional, con la promesa de durar hasta la muerte. Esto último es confesado con una claridad que podría llegar a ser inquietante: "Quiero que te quedes hasta que esté en la tumba". Aún así la dulzura de la voz de Billie permite tomar todo el panorama como una de las canciones de amor más bonitas interpretadas por la cantante.

Again she achieves a contrast by introducing just after the song WILDFLOWER where she talks about a somewhat controversial situation. She talks about being comforting a girl after a breakup, however being starting a relationship with the young man from whom that girl separated. Clearly the feeling of guilt and shame attacks every moment, the comparison and the memory of that girl are an impediment to a stable emotional connection in this new relationship, being the cause of her own martyrdom.

Otra vez logra un contraste al introducir justo después la canción WILDFLOWER en donde habla de una situación un tanto controversial. Habla de estar reconfortando a una chica tras una ruptura, sin embargo estar iniciando una relación con el joven del cual esa chica se separó. Claramente el sentimiento de culpa y vergüenza ataca a cada instante, la comparación y el recuerdo de esa muchacha son un impedimento para una conexión emocional estable en esta nueva relación, siendo la causa de su propio martirio.

It continues with the theme of heartbreak in THE GREATEST. Here, however, her role is different; she is the one who overexerts herself to make her partner happy and is plunged into despair of not feeling the same impetus back. This track allows Billie to show her vocal power when at the climax of the song she unleashes her voice to express all that suffering. It also has a live presentation that has been one of my favorites of the artist.

Continúa con la temática del desamor en THE GREATEST. Aquí, sin embargo, su rol es otro; ella es quien se sobreesfuerza para hacer feliz a su pareja y es sumida en la desesperación de no sentir el mismo ímpetu de vuelta. Esta pista permite a Billie mostrar su poder vocal cuando en el clímax de la canción desata su voz para expresar todo ese sufrimiento. Además cuenta con una presentación en vivo que ha sido de mis favoritas de la artista.

L'AMOUR DE MA VIE means the love of my life in French. Just let some ex know here lied when he or she told that she or he were the love of her life. Something that I find interesting about this track is how it goes through different musical accompaniments, achieving a refreshing and effervescent effect, adding a tone of mischief to the song.

L'AMOUR DE MA VIE significa el amor de mi vida en francés. Justo le comunica aquí a algún ex que mintió cuando le dijo que era él o ella era el amor de su vida. Algo que me parece interesante de esta pista es cómo va transitando por distintos acompañamientos musicales, logrando un efecto refrescante y efervescente, añadiendo un tono de picardía a la canción.

With THE DINER she takes up a chilling point of view again. It tells a story that can be seen from two points of view: that of a person who is being harassed or that of the harasser himself. Billie has also spoken on different occasions about how this topic has affected her so it has been like a catharsis to find these topics in her music.

Con THE DINER retoma un punto de vista escalofriante. Cuenta una historia que puede ser vista desde dos puntos de vista: el de una persona que está siendo acosada o el desde el propio acosador. Billie también ha hablado en distintas ocasiones sobre cómo este tema la ha afectado así que viene siendo como una catarsis encontrarnos con estos tópicos en su música.

She then manages an interesting pun with the song BITTERSUITE. With this title she gives us to understand the message: a young woman (who has been careful not to fall in love) is left in a suite, bitter and dissatisfied. In addition, the term "suite" also refers to musical pieces, since the song is composed in different acts.

Logra luego un juego de palabras interesante con la canción BITTERSUITE. Con este título nos da a entender el mensaje: una joven (que ha sido cuidadosa para no enamorarse) es dejada en una suite, amargada e insatisfecha. Además el término "suite" también hace referencia a las piezas musicales, dado que la canción está compuesta en distintos actos.

Finally there is BLUE, which is the result of combining two songs that were never revealed. There she takes the opportunity to refer to the rest of the songs on the album and close with a flourish. The color was very well respected on the album cover, an image that deserves my praise because it sums up the story contained in the songs very well.

Para finalizar está BLUE, que es el resultado de combinar dos canciones que nunca fueron reveladas. Así aprovecha para hacer referencia al resto de las canciones del álbum y cerrar con broche de oro. El color fue muy bien respetado en la portada del álbum, imagen que se merece mis elogios porque resume muy bien la historia contenida en las canciones.

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT would then become another experiment to explore her own history and identity, in addition to her fears and insecurities. Billie is still a girl with complicated emotions who has lived through situations that she is still trying to heal from, and it is a gift that she makes that process a work of art and also shares it with the world.

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT vendría siendo entonces otro experimento para explorar su propia historia e identidad, además de sus miedos e inseguridades. Billie sigue siendo una chica con emociones complicadas que ha vivido situaciones de las que todavía intenta sanar, y es un regalo que haga de ese proceso una obra de arte y que además la comparta con el mundo.
