eternal sunshine [eng-esp]

More than a week ago, Ariana Grande's latest studio album was released, and this is precisely my recommendation for the day due to the excellent experience it gave me while listening to it.

This conceptual album is based on the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." In this movie, two lovers manage to erase their memories after wishing they had never met, only to discover that destiny cannot be controlled. These parallels with cinema are especially evident in the music video for the single "we can't be friends (wait for your love)."

The album begins by posing an important question: If the world were to end tomorrow, would I be the person on your mind? This question serves as the foundation that immerses us in the narrative of what may be Ariana's best project.

Then, we have songs that range from deep attraction towards someone to songs that convey feelings of shame and guilt. Here, we were able to learn a lot about the singer's private life, as her lyrics become very clear and direct at certain points, creating an immediate connection for the listener.

The interlude titled "Saturn Returns" is voiced by an astrologer who explains this phenomenon, which occurs when Saturn returns to the same position it was in at the time of your birth (estimated to be between 27-30 years old) and tends to be a stage of strong transitions in people's lives. Once again, Ariana shows more aspects of her life through astrology, demonstrating how at the peak of her career, when she achieves her dream of playing Glinda in the movie "Wicked," her marriage crumbles.

Regarding the album's sonic aesthetic, it feels like a summary of all her previous work while also introducing us to a new singer. This is why harmonies made with her own voice are not lacking, in addition to the R&B that is already part of her style. Perhaps this is why my favorite song from the album from the start was "bye." Personally, I believe that although it may seem like a typical and very commercial song, it gains a lot with its pre-chorus, which is based on a very interesting two-voice harmony. Additionally, the message it leaves us with is one of empowerment after a breakup and returning to oneself after such experiences.

In the end, in the song "ordinary things," we hear Nonna, Ariana's grandmother, providing an answer to the initial question. She tells us: "Never go to bed without kissing goodnight ( ... ) and if you can't, and if you don't feel comfortable doing it, you ou're in the wrong place, get out", and in the background we can hear Ariana's laughter as she feels joyful hearing her months' worth of lessons summarized in her grandmother's words.

Hace ya más de una semana salió el último album de estudio de Ariana Grande, y este es precisamente mi recomendación del día por la exelente experiencia que me generó mientras lo escuchaba.

Este álbum conceptual está basado en la película "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind". En esta dos amantes consiguen borrar sus recuerdos tras el deseo de nunca haberse conocido, hasta descubrir que el destino no se puede controlar. Estos paralelismos con el cine se ven sobre todo en el video musical del single "we can't be friends (wait for your love)".

El álbum comienza planteándose una pregunta importante: ¿Si el mundo se acabara mañana, sería yo la persona en tu mente? Este planteamiento es la base que nos adentra en la narrativa del que quizás sea el mejor proyecto de Ariana.

Luego, tenemos canciones que van desde lo profundo de la atracción hacia alguien, hasta canciones que nos transmiten sentimientos de vergüenza y culpa. Aquí pudimos conocer mucho de la vida privada de la cantante, ya que sus letras se vuelven muy claras y directas en algunos puntos, de manera que quien escucha establece una conexión inmediata.

El interludio titulado "Saturn Returns" lo tenemos en la voz de una astróloga que explica este fenómeno, que sucede cuando Saturno regresa a la misma posición en que estaba en el momento de tu nacimiento (lo que se estima debe ser entre los 27-30 años) y tiende a ser una etapa de transiciones fuertes en la vida de las personas. Otra vez, Ariana muestra más aspectos de su vida a través de la astrología, ya que nos demuestra cómo en el mejor momento de su carrera, cuando consigue su sueño de actuar como Glinda en la película "Wicked", su matrimonio se desmorona.

En cuanto a la estética sonora del álbum, este se siente como un resumen de todos sus trabajos anteriores en el que, a su vez, conocemos a una nueva cantante. De ahí que no faltan las armonías hechas con su propia voz, además de el RnB que es ya parte de su estilo. Quizás por esto mi canción favorita del álbum desde un inicio fue "bye". En lo personal creo que, aunque puede parecer una canción típica y muy comercial, gana mucho con el pre-coro, que se basa en una armonía a dos voces muy interesante. Además, el mensaje que nos deja es de empoderamiento tras una ruptura, el regreso a uno mismo después de este tipo de experiencias.

Al final, en la canción de "ordinary things" recibimos en la voz de Nonna, la abuela de Ariana, la respuesta a la incógnita planteada en un inicio. Ella nos dice que "Nunca te vayas a dormir sin antes besarlo, y si no te sientes cómodo con eso, entonces no es el indicado", y en el fondo se escuchan las risas de Ariana, que se siente alegre de escuchar resumida su lección de meses en las palabras de su abuela.
