The effect of profit-driven decisions by manufacturers and traders.

Profit-driven decisions by manufacturers and traders have significantly impacted product quality and consumer behavior. Entrepreneurs invest their efforts into ensuring their businesses thrive, often prioritizing profitability over product longevity. A historical example is the 1925 cartel agreement among major light bulb manufacturers, including Philips and General Electric, which intentionally reduced bulb lifespan from over 2,500 hours to a mere 1,000 hours to encourage repeat purchases. This trend continues today, with modern bulbs like LEDs offering longer life due to technological advancements.
Similarly, nylon, once known for its durability, was weakened by Dupont executives to prompt more sales, while electronics and appliances have also succumbed to profit motives. Old televisions and appliances are still functional decades later, but manufacturers began using cheaper components in the 1990s, drastically reducing their lifespan. Cars, too, have evolved; previously reliable models transformed into systems with non-repairable designs, forcing consumers to spend more on maintenance and repairs.
The smartphone industry reflects similar practices, with brands like Apple accused of intentionally slowing down older models to drive upgrades. Today, phones come with built-in batteries that necessitate full replacements once they fail.
In local markets, retailers often exploit consumers through deceptive practices, such as manipulating weights and packaging to maximize profit at the expense of quality. This series of profit-driven tactics forces consumers into a cycle of continuous purchases, leading to frustration as they receive lower-quality products. Ultimately, the relentless pursuit of profit in various industries has created a world where consumer choices are constrained by artificially shortened product lifespans and deceptive practices.
This is where we find ourselves. We keep living till we live no more.
