The Ginkgo Memorial at Breitscheidplatz

Sometimes it’s the small, quiet places that touch you most amid the noise of the city. While strolling across Breitscheidplatz in Berlin, I came across this subtle yet deeply poetic monument: a bronze plaque shaped like a leaf, inscribed with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s famous Ginkgo poem.

The ginkgo tree, often called the “tree of the East,” is not only botanically fascinating but also a powerful symbol of friendship, harmony, and the unity of opposites. That’s exactly what Goethe’s poem reflects: the ginkgo leaf, with its two distinct halves forming a single whole, becomes a metaphor for love, for human nature, and the eternal search for unity in diversity.

The monument even includes an invitation to “become a tree sponsor” – a beautiful fusion of poetic thought and practical action. It’s a gentle reminder that nature and poetry both deserve a place in our urban lives.

Das Ginkgo-Denkmal am Breitscheidplatz

Manchmal sind es die kleinen Dinge, die inmitten des Großstadttrubels besonders berühren. Beim Schlendern über den Breitscheidplatz in Berlin entdeckte ich dieses unscheinbare, aber poetisch tiefgründige Denkmal: Ein bronzenes Blatt, in das das berühmte Ginkgo-Gedicht von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe eingraviert ist.

Der Ginkgo, oft als „Baum des Ostens“ bezeichnet, ist nicht nur botanisch interessant, sondern auch ein starkes Symbol für Freundschaft, Harmonie und die Vereinigung von Gegensätzen. Genau darum geht es auch in Goethes Gedicht: Die Form des Ginkgoblattes – zwei Hälften, die doch ein Ganzes ergeben – wird zur Metapher für die Liebe, für das Menschsein, für das ewige Streben nach Einheit in der Vielfalt.

Die Inschrift auf dem Denkmal ruft dazu auf, „Baumpate zu werden“ – ein schöner Gedanke, der das Symbolische mit dem Praktischen verbindet. Denn nicht nur Poesie, sondern auch Umweltbewusstsein gehört in unsere Städte.

Ein wunderbarer Moment der Ruhe inmitten des Berliner Alltags. Ich bin froh, ihn entdeckt zu haben – und vielleicht schaut ihr bei eurem nächsten Besuch am Ku'damm auch mal genauer hin.
