A New Buddy Bear at the Crowne Plaza Berlin

While strolling near Berlin’s famous Kurfürstendamm, I came across a new addition to my Buddy Bear collection — this time right in front of the Crowne Plaza Hotel. This bear immediately caught my eye because it’s quite different from the brightly colored and often playful Buddy Bears we know.

The bear’s surface is covered in a collage of historical references, text fragments, and maps. Names like “Checkpoint Charlie,” “USA,” “FREEDOM,” and “VIVE BERLIN” are scattered across its body, alongside images of the American flag and Berlin landmarks. The design feels like a tribute to the divided city and the Cold War era, evoking themes of freedom, unity, and remembrance.

What I love about this bear is that it doesn’t just look good — it tells a story. It invites reflection on Berlin’s past, its transformation, and its unique place in history as a symbol of both division and reunification. While some Buddy Bears are playful or whimsical, this one has depth and almost acts as a walking (or rather standing) monument.

Finding it near the Crowne Plaza, just a short walk from Ku’damm, made the experience even more fitting: a meeting point of old and new Berlin, where tourists and locals pass by daily. Another great piece for my growing Buddy Bear photo collection!

Bei einem Spaziergang nahe dem berühmten Kurfürstendamm habe ich einen neuen Buddy Bären entdeckt – direkt vor dem Crowne Plaza Hotel. Dieser Bär ist mir sofort aufgefallen, weil er sich deutlich von den sonst oft bunten und verspielten Buddy Bären unterscheidet.

Seine Oberfläche ist eine Collage aus historischen Anspielungen, Textfragmenten und Landkarten. Namen wie „Checkpoint Charlie“, „USA“, „FREEDOM“ und „VIVE BERLIN“ ziehen sich über seinen Körper, zusammen mit Abbildungen der amerikanischen Flagge und Berliner Wahrzeichen. Das Design wirkt wie eine Hommage an die geteilte Stadt und die Zeit des Kalten Krieges, verbunden mit Themen wie Freiheit, Einheit und Erinnerung.

Was mir an diesem Bären besonders gefällt: Er ist nicht nur dekorativ, er erzählt auch eine Geschichte. Er lädt dazu ein, über Berlins Vergangenheit, seinen Wandel und seine einzigartige Rolle in der Weltgeschichte nachzudenken – als Symbol für Teilung und Wiedervereinigung. Während manche Buddy Bären eher verspielt wirken, hat dieser Bär Tiefe und kommt fast wie ein kleines Denkmal daher.

Dass ich ihn ausgerechnet vor dem Crowne Plaza, nur wenige Schritte vom Ku’damm entfernt, gefunden habe, passt perfekt: Hier treffen das alte und das neue Berlin aufeinander, Touristen und Einheimische gehen täglich vorbei. Ein wunderbares neues Stück für meine wachsende Buddy Bären-Sammlung!
