Valentines gone wrong

Love is a beautiful thing if you find yourself in the hands of the right person. When you truly love someone, you should be able to commit to the person. It pains me the way people misunderstand this Valentine; it is a season of love and not a season of competition. The majority of people have lost their lives all in the name of celebrating Valentine.

The main reason why I stopped celebrating Valentine's before now is that I was always super happy whenever Valentine's was approaching. I saw it as an avenue to celebrate the love of my life. It is a period when I appreciate him for standing with me. I always plan ahead of time so that everything will be perfect.

In the year 2021 Valentine's went wrong. I planned to surprise my man in a grand way, but I received the shock of my life. I was busy memorising my boyfriend's favourite song on my piano. I went as far as buying someone to teach me how to play piano. On February 14th, which is Valentine's Day, I booked a room in his favourite hostel. I have it decorated with flowers and balloons. I wore a red gown because red is his favourite colour. I looked so gorgeous in my outfit.

For three hours I was waiting for my boyfriend to come. I called his number, but he was not picking up. I kept telling myself that it was fine. I came up with this ideology that he was stuck in traffic. I stared at my phone and smiled. I read his previous message where he promised me that year's Valentine's would be the best.

It was 5pm in the evening, and still my boyfriend had not come. Now the reality is playing out. My makeup is worn out, and the candle beside me has melted. Scrolling through my phone, my friends are sending me pictures of their valentines. On the other hand, my boyfriend is not picking up his call. I was really in a tight corner.

My best friend called me, informing me that my boyfriend just proposed to someone. I told her to stop the play because it was too expensive. The next thing I received was a video from my friend. In the video was my boyfriend kneeling down to propose to someone else, not me. Immediately I started sweating under the AC. Of all days to hurt me, it was on Valentine's Day. Just like that, no explanation, no quarrel, leaving me in the dark.

I started playing the song, crying, staring at the empty chair. I feel so broken, Valentine, that I plan to make it the best day of my life, but it turns out to be the worst day of my life.
