Reforming democracy in Nigeria
Good day, amazing people of the Hive Blockchain. Welcome back to my blog. It is another edition in the #hivelearners community. I am so delighted to participate in this week's prompt, democracy.
There are many systems of government, and each country has a particular one they operate with, believing each of the systems is good. What really matters is if the leader has the best interest of the people he or she is governing. When it comes to my country, we are operating the democratic system of government, which is government of the people, by the people and for the people, where the citizens choose who they want and the people will lead.
Of course my country practises a democratic system of government. I can beat my chest that my country is far when it comes to the democratic system of government. There is no freedom of speech. The government of the people, by the people and for the people has turned into a nightmare because the people that are being governed are living in fear; they can’t easily express themselves.
The democracy system of government is known for its transparency, but here in my country there is no transparency. Voting is always voided by violence and the purchase of votes. Every single politician in my country is corrupt, and they don’t care about the citizens; all they are after is their selfish interest. Most times I always ask myself what is the need of stressing people to vote? At the end of the day, the election will be rigged. My friends will always tell me there is no need of voting because our vote no longer counts in the country. democracy system of government that should favour every citizen becomes the citizens' biggest nightmare.
The democracy system of government is known for its accountability. The government should be accountable to the citizens because they didn’t go into office on their own; there are people who put them there, and they should be accountable to them at every point in time. But due to the corruption in my country, citizens no longer know their rights, and if they try to raise their voice, they will be silent. Tell me why there should be shedding of blood in a country that practices democracy. Once the citizens try to protest so that the government can hear their voice, the outcome is always bloody. People who put them in that position are suffering while they are embezzling the money and enriching their families save for their fourth generation.
There is nothing wrong with the democracy system of government; for me, this is the best system of government. The only problem we have is our politicians are so corrupt. If we can be honest and truthful to ourselves, we will enjoy this democratic system of government. If you can stop favouritism, corruption, and rigging of elections, things will work out. From time to time our governors should organise a media chat where they will have interaction with the citizens, get to the problem of the citizens and so on.
I will still prefer the democracy system of government. All we need to do is to sweep out the bad eggs in the system. As a leader, you should be after the well-being of the people under you. As a leader you must be transparent and accountable.

As it stands now, democracy in Nigeria will only be properly practiced if Nigerians finally stick together as one to demand a reform without anyone switching sides for selfish benefits and without bias and tribalistic wars.
The way we practice democracy in Nigeria makes us look ridiculous. Those in power only make use of the democratic system to bargain for international recognition but underneath the whole facade, our rulers knows that what we practice isn't democracy but absolutism or oligarchy
