Gone are the days when security was guarding us; currently, our lives are in God’s hands due to the level of insecurity in my country. I get to love one particular bible verse: “If the Lord doesn’t keep guard, the watchman watches in vain.” The insecurity in my country is great. Most times, I am so afraid of travelling. If I love travelling currently, if I hear about it, I will tell you it is not interesting due to the level of insecurity.

Currently, in my country, everyone has our security because the few security measures we have are for top politicians. The poor are only trying their best to protect themselves as best they can. That is the country we see ourselves in, where the government is all about their well-being and the citizens are being neglected. They will safeguard themselves and their household.

Talking about the insecurity in my country really makes me weep for my fellow citizens. We are really suffering, and people are being killed like chickens. Kidnapping people has become the norm these days. This is really going out of hand. People are living in fear because of their insecurity; the majority are afraid of travelling again.

Last month, my younger sister, who was doing her NYSC, came back home. She was telling me that they told them to stop wearing their NYSC uniform. I asked her why I got to know that it was because of insecurity because the government couldn’t secure the Corper's. That is when I got to know that this insecurity was really getting out of hand.

The same month, when my uncle was going to the village to prepare for my grandmother's burial, he was kidnapped on his way. I could have followed him on that trip, but he had to tell me to stay back so that I could stay with his boys in the shop.

I didn’t receive a call from him. I tried calling him, but his number was switched. I was so worried that I could not sleep that day. The next morning, I received a call from an unknown caller. I picked up the call only to hear my uncle's voice in the background, begging them. The demand for $5 million was that I should bring it in within the next 72 hours. I bargained the price with them, and they ended up demanding $4 million.

I beg them to allow me to speak to my uncle. My uncle told me I should go and pay the money before these people kill him.

I push to the shop to talk about all the money we made the previous day, and I borrowed money from my uncle's friend. I want the address to be sent to me, and I drop the money. My uncle then releases all the things he was travelling to the village with.

I was happy that they didn’t kill my uncle, and they didn’t carry his car.

The government knows how the citizens are suffering because of insecurity. It's not that they don’t know what to do; they just decide to keep calm because, with all the security protecting them, the lives of the citizens don’t matter to them.

I have decided never to put my trust in the security of my country. I will protect myself the best I can. I am always on alert. Never forget that in situations like this, God is the only person who can protect us.

My little piece of advice is to try not to stay out late and always come back home on time. God will continue to protect us.
