If only i listen #245

Hearing certain words after making a mistake and feeling judged and attacked in the deepest part of our being, what do you think of this phrase: I told you so? Would you also say it to someone else?

Experience, they say, is the best teacher. Most times the only way we learn is by learning the hard way, more especially we youth. We don’t listen to advice, and at the end we will be full of regret. The word I told you so can be heartbreaking, more especially when it is coming from judgement; it will really be hard for such a person to move on because their emotions and feelings are hurt. For most people the word is harmless, while to others it can depress them.

There is no human who doesn’t make mistakes at some point; most times we make decisions we think are right, but at the end we are full of regret. For me, the words I told you don’t really hurt me; the fact that I failed is always heartbreaking.

One faithful day I was at home when my friend came to my house, telling me about one online platform that I could invest in and get my money more than twice. I was curious; at the same time, I found it interesting. I needed her to tell me about the platform. When she left, I told my mom about the platform; she advised me not to do it.

The next day my friend came to my house, showing me the money she received from the platform. Immediately I transferred money to my friend for her to invest for me. According to her, in the next two weeks I will get back my money with interest.

In a week's time my friend came to me telling me that the platform had crashed. I was so heartbroken because the money I transferred to her was my school fees. When I told my mom that the platform had crashed, her words were, I told you. At this point I was so pained and heartbroken; I was full of regret, and I didn’t stop blaming myself.

I will not lie. The tension was too much for me. I gambled with my school fees. It was very hard for me to move forward; I was full of regret.

I have been in this situation, and I fully understand how painful it can be to tell someone, I told you so. Instead of us blaming the person, all they need is someone who will understand and support them. It is important to give such a person a listening ear and encourage the person to make them feel loved.

Encourage them not to dwell on their mistakes; rather, they should learn from them and move forward.
