Coot with Nest and Chicks // Blässhuhn mit Nest und Küken
The photo most likely shows a Coot, I'm unfortunately not a biologist and don't know much about animals. But Google Lens says it's a Coot :D. It can probably be identified by its sooty dark plumage, the black head, and the striking white beak with the white frontal shield above it. I found the nest very interesting because it's located right in the middle of a small pond in Cologne, and unfortunately surrounded by garbage... My girlfriend and I decided to volunteer for litter picking, as seeing something like this somehow gives me the urge to do so.
1. Empty Nest
There's a lot of algae in the background, and the mother is swimming around the nest, with the chicks swimming slightly outside the frame, so no cause for concern.
2. High Contrast and Sharpness
Shows the same subject with a different edit, much darker and more contrasty. I like the strong mix of cool and bright tones.
3. There's one of the chicks
You can clearly see the garbage lying right next to the nest here. I assume it's an M&M's packet. A slightly sadder edit to match the scene.
4. More Colourful
Since I'm a fan of warm brown tones, this edit couldn't be missing. The chick's head shows the orange tones in all their glory here. It's actually interesting that the head later turns black.
5. Chick Snaps at Garbage
What can I say about this picture? It shows the chick gnawing or pulling at the plastic. This significantly changes the picture in my view. Swimming in the garbage is one thing, mistaking it for food is another.
6. Chick in the Nest
It turned out there were actually two chicks. I managed to capture both of them together in the nest, where they keep each other warm.
7. Analog Film Look
Strong use of a vignette, and I love it. The focus is entirely on the mother and the water looks almost clear. The brown leaves at the bottom of the pond and the high contrast make the image especially sharp.
8. Foraging
Not only the chicks but also the mother were looking for food. To not jeopardize the reputation of the good mother, I still included this picture :P
Observing and photographing animals is something I do far too seldom, but it has its own unique charm. Something is constantly happening, every moment could look better than the last, and you never know what will happen next. In the city, I feel like I don't see many animals, or at least I don't actively look out for them - maybe the opportunity will arise in the coming weeks to photograph animals again, I'll definitely take my camera with me.
Das Foto zeigt sehr wahrscheinlich ein Blässhuhn, bin leider kein Biologe und mit Tieren kenne ich mich auch nicht so aus. Aber Google Lens sagt, dass es ein Blässhuhn sei :D. Erkennbar ist es wohl am rußig dunklen Gefieder, dem schwarzen Kopf sowie dem markanten weißen Schnabel mit der darüberliegenden weißen Stirnplatte. Ich fand das Nest sehr interessant, weil es mitten auf einem kleinen Weiher in Köln ist, und leider umgeben von Müll... Meine Freundin und ich haben uns vorgenommen, ehrenamtlich Müll sammeln zu gehen; wenn ich sowas sehe, bekomme ich dazu irgendwie das Bedürfnis.
1. Leeres Nest
Im Hintergrund sind jede Menge Algen, und die Mutter schwimmt ums Nest herum, die Küken schwimmen etwas außerhalb des Bildes, also kein Grund zur Sorge.
2. Hoher Kontrast und Schärfe
Zeigt dasselbe Motiv mit einem anderen Edit, wesentlich düsterer und kontrastreicher. Ich mag die starke Mischung aus kühlen und hellen Tönen.
3. Da ist eines der Küken
Man sieht hier recht deutlich den Müll, der direkt neben dem Nest liegt. Ich vermute, das ist eine Packung M&Ms. Passend dazu ein etwas traurigerer Edit.
4. Farbenfroher
Weil ich ein Fan von warmen Brauntönen bin, darf dieser Edit nicht fehlen. Der Kopf des Küken zeigt hier in voller Pracht die Orangetöne. Eigentlich interessant, dass der Kopf dann später schwarz wird.
5. Küken schnappt nach Müll
Was soll ich zu dem Bild sagen. Es zeigt das Küken, wie es an dem Plastik nagt bzw. zieht. Verändert in meiner Sicht das Bild nochmal wesentlich stärker. Im Müll zu schwimmen ist das eine, es für Nahrung zu halten das andere.
6. Küken im Nest
Tatsächlich sind es zwei Küken gewesen. Beide zusammen vor der Kamera habe ich tatsächlich im Nest geschafft. Wo sie sich beide warm halten.
7. Analoger Film-Look
Starker Einsatz einer Vignette, und ich lieb's. Der Fokus liegt komplett auf der Mutter und das Wasser sieht schon fast klar aus. Die braunen Blätter auf dem Boden des Weihers und der hohe Kontrast machen das Bild besonders scharf.
8. Auf Futtersuche
Nicht nur die Küken, sondern auch die Mutter waren auf der Suche nach Futter. Um den Ruf der guten Mutter nicht zu gefährden, hab ich das Bild auch noch reingepackt :P
9. Doch noch nicht warm genug?
Bewegung im Nest? Vermutlich war die Position noch nicht warm genug. Auch hier wirkt das Wasser durch den Edit wieder klarer, als es war. Aber ich liebe diese Aufnahme: Das Wasser wirkt so kalt, und das Nest so warm. Das sind Kontraste, die ich liebe.
Tiere zu beobachten und zu fotografieren, ist etwas, das ich viel zu selten tue, hat aber seinen ganz eigenen Charme. Es passiert ständig etwas, jeder Moment könnte besser aussehen als der nächste, und man weiß nie, was als Nächstes passiert. In der Stadt sehe ich gefühlt nicht viele Tiere, oder zumindest achte ich nicht aktiv drauf – vielleicht ergibt sich in den kommenden Wochen mal die Möglichkeit, nochmal Tiere zu fotografieren, meine Kamera nehme ich auf jeden Fall mit.
