THE DIGITAL LIFESTYLE: ARE WE MORE CONNECTED OR MORE ALONE?

Hey People! Its been a crazy cold season over here in Port Harcourt. I hope the weather over there is favorable.

I just want to talk about something that is now a part of our everyday life and that is- The digital Lifestyle.

Like let’s be real; most of the things we do these days happen online. These activities range from chatting to working to shopping to learning and even to eating. Because, come to think of it; ordering food now is just a few taps on your phone. That’s if you have access to the internet though, since our folks in the rural areas probably aren’t really part of this lifestyle.

You see people every day, either scrolling, swiping, posting, streaming, attending Zoom meetings or on calls. Some of us run businesses online, try to build friendships online and even fall in love online(hahaha). I’ve seen people who have never met physically, sign business deals and even get married and this is all thanks to “tekinologia”(technology)

It’s amazing to see how far we have really come. Like honestly, without tech, I wouldn’t even be here on Hive connecting with amazing minds like you. And let’s not even lie, Hive has really been a huge part of our digital journey because many of us here have earned money on this platform, learnt new things, and built strong lasting friendships.

Everything now seems way more easier. We don’t queue for long hours anymore. We can work from anywhere. We can learn anything from YouTube ranging from tech skills to how to make pap 😅. Yeah I know, it’s a really sweet life.
But… here is something I keep asking myself:
Are we really becoming more connected, or are we slowly becoming more alone?

Because sometimes, even with all the chats and calls, I still feel a bit lonely. Physical hangouts are no longer as common as they were. Conversations don’t last long anymore, and attention spans? Honestly, they are almost gone.

There are days I spend almost the whole day online and still feel quite empty.

I’ve got days like yesterday where I was on my phone from 6am (apart from when I had to freshen up, eat, pray and talk to a friend).
I catch myself picking up my phone the moment I open my eyes in the morning.
And you want to know the worst part? Sometimes, after hours online, I still feel like I didn’t do anything meaningful for a whole day.

It’s crazy, right?

So I’ve been trying to make a few changes and it’s nothing serious. It just involves the little things like setting time for different activities, going offline for a few hours each day, using airplane mode, and using social media to learn and connect instead of comparing myself to people I don’t even know.

The Truth is, I love the digital life; of course, I’m not against it at all. But I think it’s time I started using it more intentionally. Let tech work for me, not control me.

Thanks for reading my blog

This digital life wey we dey live sef. Well as they say, whatever has it’s advantages also has it disadvantages.
and this applies to the digital life as well. The idea of not allowing it control us is something that is very much lightly spoken of.

A beautiful piece of writing you have here sir. Well done .

Thank you very much for your nice comment.

Yes, we really need to pay attention to putting modalities in place so as not to be controlled by the digital life, but rather have control over it.

Tech brings with it so much advantages which are of course, not without disadvantages.
