Lokoja Flood.
The Flood set's in.
Waking up today decided to take a walk around my community because it is weekend and a day to rest and feel the nature's breeze. I noticed people gathering towards the river bank and lamenting, expressing a saddened face, and whispering "this years flood will be massive than previous ". Then I asked an occupant who then narrate the situation better to me.
They have always been an unfortunate event that takes place every rainy season in a year, that is in every year, on the month of June running down September there's this massive increase in water body in my community in lokoja, close to the river bank or coastal urban-rural area still developing actually.
This increase in water volume comes from the release of massive water from a distance dam in a near by country called Cameroon, because it seems when there is excessive down pour of rain the dam tends to over flow and becomes uncontrollable which makes the authorities demand the water from the dam be released to prevent catastrophe within the country, where as not having it in mind the channels or navigation this river basin crosses through Nigeria with not less than 8 states my state inclusive.
Currently I happen to witness and see the rate at which the water body is gradually increasing causing panic and tremble that this years flood occurrence might be more disastrous than past times. It is so saddened that the government keeps mute and wait till the disaster happens then they are quick to send relieve materials and use the opportunity to steal funds and materials meant for the displaced personnel. What a wicked world.
A lot of demands had been submitted to make sure the government construct a canal in form of a huge gutter just besides the river bank to enable any increase in the volume of water navigate through without extending into the community.
I can tell you for free that the disaster flood comes with, destroys anything agricultural product within it premises, infrastructures and buildings will be damaged causing high rate of displaced personnel, roads will be inaccessible resulting to traffic.
I found out that it is better and safer every occupant or land owners closer to the river bank relocate immediately, prevention is better than cure or treatment. It is better they secure their property's and lives earlier than later when it might be too late.
The month of august hasn't ended yet but the signs are already occurring on the images I attached.
What will then become of the community if the dam is released of it excess water?.
If the government is still giving a deaf ear on this situation, it is better the occupant make themselves safe by evacuating the zone, then hoping government related sector NEMA (environmental agencies) starts doing the needed work.
I made this write up just to create positive awareness because other neighborhood and states are facing similar problems of floods every rainy season of the year.
Thanks for reading through and help create the awareness on dangers relating to floods.
all images are mine.
This is serious ohhohh, seriously the government really needs to do something to curb thisnonn
I wish they listen to the cries of this people, the kogi indigenous peoples are really suffering @aowilson we pray for the best
Every single year there are different flood cases in kogi state entirely. The news sef is tiring and the worst part of it all is that this will keep happening with little to nothing done to fix this issue.
