Why You Should Never Outshine Your Boss (Or Anyone in Charge)
Ever noticed how some people get into trouble at work not because they’re lazy or bad, but because they’re too good? It sounds odd, but it happens all the time. Being competent is great. But there’s a trap, making your boss or leader feel threatened.
Imagine you’re new at a job.You are eager and very willing to impress the people at work, you deliver results at a very fast rate.
But in meetings, you keep correcting your manager’s plans. You take charge of projects before being asked. Soon, you notice your boss avoids you.
When it comes to entrusting new tasks, they no longer trust you.
You get passed over for promotion.
Why is this so ? It is because they were threatened by you and began feeling insecure
Why is this so ? ...It is because no one likes to be shown up in front of others, especially someone who has worked hard to get to a position of authority. People want to feel respected. Even the best bosses want to know you have their back, not that you’re trying to replace them.
A friend of mine once joined a marketing firm straight out of school.
When it comes to writing better ads, negotiating better deals, and solving problems,, she was very good at it.
Instead of being subtle about it, she kept volunteering her ideas in big meetings, overshadowing her boss. Within six months, she was quietly pushed out. Not because she was incompetent, but because she failed to read the room.
What’s the lesson? If you’re smart and talented, use it wisely. Support your boss, make them look good, offer help privately, not in a way that steals the spotlight.
You will be rewarded, even promoted when they trust you.
In real life, people skills often matter more than technical talent. It’s not about being fake or dishonest.you just have to understand human nature. People don't need rivals in disguise ,they need allies.
If you want to grow in your career or even in social groups, learn when to shine and when to let others have the credit. Make those in charge feel secure, respected, and valued. It’s not weakness,it’s strategy. And it can make the difference between being sidelined and being someone everyone wants on their team.
