So recently, I have been seeing so much hype surrounding this lates movie called "Straw" , After watching this movie ,I sat quietly for a while. I wasn’t sure how to feel. I was heavy, sad, and angry but in a way that made me reflect, not regret watching. This isn’t the kind of film you watch to escape life. You watch this type of movie in other to face it

The kind of story told in this movie feels too real. It is not just messy but also emotional, and raw. It’s not perfect, but it’s honest.

The Story

The movie follows a woman named Janiyah Wilkinson, played by Taraji P. Henson.

She was exposed to the harsh reality of life as a single mother.

Her daughter is sick. Paying bills was such a huge burden. She’s working hard but still can’t afford her rent. And to make the matters worst , nobody actually seem to care. The world is cold, and she’s been left out in it with no jacket.

From the beginning, you can feel her exhaustion. Her face says it all she’s trying, but life just keeps knocking her down. She walks into work hoping for a paycheck, just enough to get by. But they tell her there’s a “delay.” For her, that’s the last straw.

What happens next is shocking but somehow understandable. In a moment of complete desperation, she pulls out a gun. Not to hurt anyone, not to rob the bank. She just wants what she’s already worked for,her own money. But the situation quickly turns into a full-blown crisis. she is being surrounded by police, She’s inside with the workers, and soon the media shows up.

At this point, it may sound like a crime movie or a hostage thriller, but it’s more than that. This movie shows us a clear picture of what will happen when someone is pushed too far, for too long, without anyone listening. It is all about pain.

What Made the movie worth watching
As the movie continues, we slowly learn more about Janiyah.

With Conversations and flashbacks ,i seem to have a clear understanding of how string the burden she is carrying is.

The final blow comes when it’s revealed that her daughter her only child died the night before. She had a seizure, and Janiyah couldn’t save her. That grief, mixed with poverty, pressure, and loneliness, brought her to this moment.

At this point ,what looked like an act of anger becomes a scream for help. She wasn’t just trying to survive, she was trying to hold on to meaning after losing the one thing that gave her life purpose.

The Acting
Let me be honest,Taraji P. Henson gave a performance that deserves awards. She didn’t act like someone playing a role. She was Janiyah. Her pain felt so real, I almost forgot I was watching a movie. Her tears weren’t just tears they were the kind that come from the soul.

Whether she was quietly breaking down in a hospital hallway, or trying to explain herself to police with shaking hands, she made me feel every emotion. Even in silence, her eyes did all the talking. I’ve seen her in many films, but this is the one that show just how powerful she really is.

The supporting cast also did a good job. Sherri Shepherd and Teyana Taylor had strong roles that added depth to th movie. They played women who tried to understand Janiyah and reach her heart. There’s a special kind of strength in the way women in this story looked out for one another, even in crisis.

The Movie Direction
Tyler Perry’s direction here was bold. He’s known for telling stories about pain, family, and faith, but Straw goes darker than most of his past work. It’s not always subtle. Some scenes are intense, and some of the dialogue is very emotional maybe even too much for some people. But the message is clear: People break. And when they do, it’s often because the system failed them.

This movie talks about poverty, mental health, grief, and how invisible people can become when they don’t fit into the system. Janiyah wasn’t a criminal. She was a mother. A worker. A woman who just needed help.

What Straw does well is make you feel what it's like to be in her shoes. We all like to believe we would never reach that breaking point, but the truth is, if we had to live her life, we might not do any better.

What Could Have Been Better
The movie isn’t perfect. Some moments felt a little rushed or overly dramatic. There were scenes that could have used more time to breathe, and a few characters weren’t fully developed. Also, the ending, while emotional, left me wishing for a bit more clarity. I won’t spoil it, but I will say I expected more closure.

There were also a few production hiccups scenes that didn’t match in tone or had some awkward transitions. These didn’t ruin the film, but they were noticeable.

But even with those flaws, the heart of the movie remained strong. Its emotional weight was enough to carry it through.

Final Thoughts
Straw is not an easy movie to watch, but it’s an important one. It reminds us that everyone has a breaking point. That behind every outburst, every desperate action, there’s often a story of years of silent suffering.

This film made me think. About people I pass on the street. About single mothers working two jobs. About families drowning in bills. About what happens when no one listens.

Would I recommend it? the answer is Yes. But only if you’re ready for a serious, emotional experience. If you want to understand what true desperation looks like and how much strength it takes just to keep going then Straw is worth your time.

My rating: 8 out of 10. Not perfect. But powerful. It stays with you.
thank you for stopping by.

Wow, this movie really left me emotional. I could feel Janiyah’s pain like it was mine. Taraji P. Henson truly brought her to life. Straw isn’t just a movie it’s a reality check. So raw, so real, so touching.

This movie was overhyped though, it's interesting, the twist at the end was really shocking and touchy.

So many people hyped the movie, it wasn't what I expected.

This movie is great, but I just don’t get the part where she had to keep people hostage. Maybe that could have been kept out of the whole plot.

Maybe,I feel it was a reflex action, something you do without knowing or maybe survival instinct
