Capturing Green Beauty: Mastering Light and Focus in Plant Photography

Some of you may say capturing photos of plants is easier. Just point your camera at the green leaf, and click. But for me, it is more than just that. When I started my mobile photography journey, I thought it would be hard to achieve high-quality shots, but I trusted myself until I could finally look beyond the green leaf.

I focus on the textures, enhance their vibrant colors, and emphasize their natural green beauty. Even with using just my smartphone, I managed to master doing it. And here's my personal experience on the journey.

The Use of Natural Lighting

Knowing how to use natural lighting is crucial in my photography because it will help greatly showcase the plant's authentic tone and glow. Of course, I always take pictures during the day, or the golden hour. Is it just me, or do the sun and clouds help a lot with shadows and vibrance of shots? Let me know in the comments section.

Learning the Art of Focus

I am not a professional photographer; I only practice capturing photos through my mobile phone. Aside from paying attention to natural lighting, mastering the art of “focus” is also essential.

Plants have intricate parts, and knowing where to focus changes the whole image and clarifies what I am trying to showcase. Is it a unique shape of a leaf? Or the colorful stems? No matter which of them, I always make sure what background to blur, and what subject to isolate from the whole shot.

When I understood how the light and focus impact every shot I take, I no longer got overwhelmed when capturing plants. I can now give an ordinary leaf a different visual.

Throughout my journey in mobile photography, emphasizing a story when capturing plants was challenging. But now, I am mastering it and making the best shots from these learnings through experience.
