Art Journal: "Tropical Reverie" Coffee Painting ☕🖌️
Hello, Hiver friends and fellow art enthusiasts! I’m thrilled to present my latest artwork, crafted using coffee as a medium.
This coffee painting transports you to a tranquil tropical scene, executed entirely in warm shades of brown. The monochromatic palette, rather than being limiting, establishes a unique and evocative atmosphere. Two palm trees lean gracefully over a calm body of water, their fronds swaying gently in an unseen breeze—this is visual poetry that speaks volumes without the need for explicit detail.
A small boat rests quietly on the water's surface, infusing the scene with a sense of solitude and peace. The shoreline serves as a meeting point for diverse vegetation, softly rendered in rich coffee hues, creating an interplay of organic forms that beautifully complements the overall stillness. A few birds punctuate the pale sky, suggesting movement and life within this serene and introspective world.
The subtle variations in brown tones—ranging from the almost beige of the water's reflection to the deeper browns of the foliage—provide an unexpected depth and texture. This artwork conveys not just a visual landscape but also a certain mood: a feeling of serene quietude and an invitation to escape. It beckons you to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty and calmness of the tropics, all rendered through a singular, evocative color. This painting is more than just an image; it’s a powerful visual journey to a tropical paradise, infused with the rich aroma and warmth of coffee.
This is not merely a painting; it is a meditation on stillness and a visual poem articulated in shades of brown. The use of coffee creates an intriguing layer, signifying warmth and richness while enhancing the sensory experience that goes beyond visual observation. This piece demands attention, inviting viewers to not only look, but to feel, reflect, and ultimately discover tranquility within this coffee-painted landscape.
I used three types of painting brushes for this piece, and it took me an hour to finish it. For those who are interested in trying this unique medium, you can follow the step-by-step basic methods below.
Materials Needed:
👉 Watercolor Paper or sketching Paper
👉 Pencil and Eraser
👉 Coffee Powder
👉 2 small cups ( lighter and darker shades)
👉 Ruler
👉 Clean Water
👉 Rag
👉 Paper napkin or paper towel
Brushes:
👉 Flat Brush /small #10, 10/32 / 8.0mm
👉 Liner Brush #2 / 2/32" / 1.6mm
👉 Filbert brush
Note: Keep all the materials ready before you start painting.
Basic Procedure:
• Outline or sketch your painting reference.
• Paint using a lighter shade of the background by creating a beautiful texture.
• On the middle ground, paint the first layer of the subject.
• The same procedure with the foreground.
• Once the first layer is completely dry, you can proceed to paint with a darker shade of coffee.
• Then add details to come alive of your painting. I used a liner brush for the thin details.
Take note: In putting details, you cannot have sharp lines and shapes unless it is completely dry.
