After watching an interview encouraging the habit of reading and suggesting audiobooks as a way to rekindle my love of books, I decided to install the Audible app on my phone and searched for some classic books to start reading again.

I've always liked historical novels, which mix a fictional narrative with historical facts, and when I found O Quinze, by Rachel de Queiroz, I had no doubts and added it to my library.

Another thing that catches my attention in a book is learning more about the regions where the history and local culture of those people take place. I've been to Ceará a few times and O Quinze is set in exactly a region that I've visited before.

Written in the last century, in 1930, O Quinze portrays a year of very severe drought that caused a historic drought in 1915 in the region of Quixadá, Ceará, in the backlands of northeastern Brazil.

In her novel, the writer tells the story of her own childhood, and it is very rich in detail when portraying the culture of Ceará and the Northeast, as well as in the local geography.

It is a masterpiece by Rachel de Queiroz, when the writer was only 19 years old, and it is surprising for the quality of the text for a newcomer to Brazilian literature.

Another highlight of the book is the record of the family and work relationships of the people who lived in the countryside in contrast to those who lived in the city, such as the capital, Fortaleza.

The main characters are the cowboy Chico Bento, who tries to survive the drought in the countryside, and Conceição, a teacher living in the capital, who visits her family in the countryside and behaves very differently and more liberally than her relatives, who still reproduce a more conservative way of life.

Also noteworthy is the mention of a concentration camp, created by the government to prevent those affected by the drought from reaching the capital and causing problems due to the hunger, poverty and diseases they faced.

It is also an accurate account of the drought that affected thousands of people and the government's corruption and inefficiency in responding to the tragedy that ended up causing countless deaths and mass displacements to other regions to escape certain death in those conditions.

Depois de assistir uma entrevista incentivando o hábito da leitura e sugerindo audiolivros como forma de retomar o gosto pelos livros, resolvi instalar o aplicativo Audible no meu telefone e procurei por alguns livros clássicos para recomeçar.

Eu sempre gostei de romances históricos, que misturam uma narrativa de ficção com fatos históricos, e quando encontrei O Quinze, de Rachel de Queiroz, não tive dúvidas e o adicionei à minha biblioteca.

Outra coisa que me chama a atenção em um livro é conhecer melhor sobre as regiões onde se passa a história e a cultura local daquele povo. Eu já estive no Ceará algumas vezes e O Quinze se passa exatamente em uma região que eu já visitei.

Escrito no século passado, em 1930, O Quinze retrata um ano de estiagem muito severo que causou uma seca histórica no ano de 1915 na região de Quixadá, Ceará, no sertão do nordeste brasileiro.

A escritora conta em seu romance a realidade que ela mesmo viveu na infância e é riquíssimo em detalhes ao retratar a cultura cearense e nordestina, assim como também é rico em detalhes da geografia local.

É uma obra-prima de Rachel de Queiroz, quando a escritora tinha apenas 19 anos de idade e surpreende pela qualidade do texto para uma estreante na literatura brasileira.

Outro destaque do livro está no registro das relações familiares e de trabalho do povo que vivia na roça em contraponto com aqueles que viviam na cidade como a capital Fortaleza.

Os personagens principais são o vaqueiro Chico Bento, que tenta sobreviver à seca na interior, e Conceição, uma professora estabelecida na capital, que visita sua família na roça e se comporta de forma muito diferente e mais liberal do que seus parentes que ainda reproduzem um modo de vida mais conservador.

Chama a atenção também a citação de um campo de concentração, criado pelo governo para evitar que os flagelados da seca chegassem a capital e causassem problemas devido à fome, pobreza e doenças que enfrentavam.

Também é um relato preciso da seca que atingiu milhares de pessoas e da corrupção e ineficiência do governo em responder à tragédia que acabou causando inúmeras mortes e deslocamentos em massa para outras regiões para fugir da morte certa naquelas condições.
