Is São Gabriel Poised to Become a Tourist Destination [EN/PT-BR]

This week, I was surprised to learn that São Gabriel, in the Campanha Gaúcha region, is among the top Brazilian tourist destinations for 2026. Having lived in this city, I know the region's attractions well and can imagine what motivated its inclusion in the list compiled by Booking.com.

According to the accommodation sales service, the list is "based on the annual increase in reservations by tourists from the country and reflects the desire for authentic experiences, contact with nature and connection with local cultures".

Among the highlighted destinations are Juquehy Beach, on the south coast of São Sebastião, on the north coast of São Paulo; Armação dos Búzios, in the Lakes Region of Rio de Janeiro; Cajueiro da Praia, in the far north of Piauí; Espírito Santo do Pinhal, in the interior of São Paulo; Serra da Canastra, in Minas Gerais; Morro Branco Beach, in the municipality of Beberibe, about 90 km from Fortaleza.

Most of these destinations are already well-known to Brazilian tourists, and the beauty of their natural attractions is undeniable. Perhaps the surprise is the municipality of Espírito Santo do Pinhal, in the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range, on the border of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, but it is also a well-known tourist region that has been receiving considerable investment and growing demand from tourists visiting the area.

Among the destinations in Rio Grande do Sul are Encantado, in the Taquari Valley, and São Gabriel, on the Western Border. The former has seen a significant increase in the number of tourists since the inauguration of the Cristo Protetor statue, inspired by the iconic Rio de Janeiro landmark, and even larger at forty meters high.

Now, São Gabriel is not only a surprise, but it doesn't have many tourist attractions that justify its inclusion on the list, except for the high demand from Argentinian tourists traveling along the BR-290 highway towards the beaches of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. Indeed, the municipality registers a huge influx of Argentinian tourists seeking accommodation in the few available hotels and guesthouses. I remember many residents offering their own homes and positioning themselves with signs in Spanish by the roadside to host them.

Curiously, whoever wrote the article certainly doesn't know the municipality in Rio Grande do Sul and didn't realize that the city only hosts tourists passing through in a region with little accommodation and intense traffic during the summer holidays.

In an attempt to understand the reason for this demand, a supposed interest in the FEB Museum, with items from World War II, churches, and historic mansions are cited as attractions. But anyone who knows the city knows that none of these attractions usually receive tourists.

Finally, the story was reported on the Globo news portal and on the social media of the São Gabriel city hall implying that the city in Rio Grande do Sul is among the jewels of local tourism, when in reality it is only a support point for Argentinians passing through to the coast, which is the final destination of the trip.

Nesta semana, fui surpreendido com a notícia de que São Gabriel, na Campanha Gaúcha, está entre os principais destinos turísticos brasileiros para 2026. Como eu já morei nesta cidade, conheço bem os atrativos da região e imagino o que tenha motivado a inclusão do município na lista elaborada pelo Booking.com.

Segundo o serviço de venda de hospedagens, a lista é “baseada no aumento anual de reservas por turistas do país e refletiria o desejo por experiências autênticas, contato com a natureza e conexão com culturas locais”.

Entre os destinos em destaque estão a Praia de Juquehy, na costa sul de São Sebastião, no litoral norte de São Paulo; Armação dos Búzios, na região dos Lagos do Rio de Janeiro; Cajueiro da Praia, no extremo norte do Piauí; Espírito Santo do Pinhal, no interior paulista; Serra da Canastra, em Minas Gerais; Praia de Morro Branco, no município de Beberibe, a cerca de 90 km de Fortaleza.

A maioria destes destinos já são bem conhecidos do turista brasileiro e a beleza das atrações naturais é inquestionável. Talvez a surpresa seja o município de Espírito Santo do Pinhal, na Serra da Mantiqueira, na divisa de São Paulo e Minas Gerais, mas também é uma região turística conhecida e que vem recebendo bastante investimento e uma procura crescente entre os turistas que visitam a região.

Entre os destinos gaúchos, estão Encantado, no Vale do Taquari, e São Gabriel, na Fronteira Oeste. A primeira delas tem tido um aumento significativo no número de turistas desde a inauguração do Cristo Protetor, estátua inspirada no cartão postal do Rio de Janeiro, e ainda maior com quarenta metros de altura.

Agora, São Gabriel, não só é uma surpresa, como não tem muitos atrativos turísticos que justifiquem a inclusão na lista. A não ser pela grande procura por parte dos turistas argentinos que se deslocam pela rodovia BR-290 em direção às praias do Rio Grande do Sul e de Santa Catarina.

Realmente, o município registra um fluxo gigantesco de turistas argentinos que procuram por hospedagens nos poucos hotéis e pousadas disponíveis. Lembro que muitos moradores oferecem suas próprias casas e se posicionam com placas em espanhol na beira da estrada para hospedá-los.

Curiosamente, quem redigiu a matéria certamente não conhece o município gaúcho e não se deu conta que a cidade apenas hospeda turistas de passagem em uma região com pouca oferta de hospedagens e fluxo intenso durante as férias de verão.

Na tentativa de entender o motivo desta procura, um suposto interesse no Museu da FEB, com itens da Segunda Guerra Mundial, igrejas e casarões históricos são citados como atrativos. Mas quem conhece a cidade, sabe que nenhuma dessas atrações costuma receber turistas.

Por fim, a matéria foi repercutida no portal de notícias da Globo e nas redes sociais da prefeitura de São Gabriel dando a entender que o município gaúcho está entre as joias do turismo local, quando na realidade trata-se apenas de um ponto de apoio para argentinos de passagem para o litoral que é o destino final da viagem.
