In my most recent visit to the city of Maracaibo in the state of Zulia in my country Venezuela, I had the joy of visiting the incredible basilica of Our Lady of Chiquinquira, she in her miraculous image was found by a humble lady who was washing clothes on the shores of the lake. As the story goes, the washerwoman saw a piece of wood floating and took it home, when she detailed it, she noticed that the board reflected an image of the virgin and she put it on her altar. The image of the tablet was reflected more and more every day and it is said that over the years her face was retouched even more.

En mi mas reciente visita a la ciudad de Maracaibo en el Estado Zulia de mi país Venezuela, pude tener la dicha de ir a visitar la increíble basílica de Nuestra señora de Chiquinquirá, ella en su imagen milagrosa fue encontrada por una humilde señora que lavaba la ropa en las orillas del lago. Según cuenta la historia la lavandera vio un trozo de madera flotando y la tomo y se la llevo a casa, al detallarla observo que en la tabla se reflejaba una imagen como de la virgen y la puso en su altar. La imagen de la tablita fue reflejándose mas cada día y dicen que con los años su rostro se retoco aun más.

The people had great faith in her and went to the house of the grandmother to ask for help in their needs.

The church and government authorities saw what was happening and decided to take the image to the colonial chapel of San Juan de Dios, located in the center of the city of Maracaibo. There was so much faith that people flocked to the chapel, especially when November 18, the day of her apparition, was approaching. It is for this reason that the authorities decided to rebuild that temple and expand it.

That is how it went from a simple colonial church to a basilica with Neoclassical style.

La gente le tenia mucha fe y acudían a la casa de la abuelita para pedirle socorro en sus necesidades.

Las autoridades de la iglesia y del gobierno al ver lo que pasaba decidieron llevar la imagen a la capilla colonial de San Juan de Dios, ubicada en el centro de la ciudad de Maracaibo. Era tanta la fe que la gente acudía en masa, sobre todo cuando se acercaba el 18 de noviembre día de su aparición. Es por ese motivo que las autoridades decidieron reconstruir aquel templo y ampliarlo.

Así fue como de una simple iglesia colonial paso a ser una basílica con estilo Neoclásico.

From what I have been investigating, the names of the architects are not known, so I have to imagine that there were several professionals involved. The only thing I can tell you is that what they did was a magnificent work, simply built by God.

Por lo que estuve investigando no se conoce el nombre de los arquitectos, así que he de imaginar que hubo varios profesionales involucrados. Lo único que si les puedo decir es que lo que hicieron fue una obra magnifica, sencillamente edificada por Dios.

I remember I went in 2012 for the first time and its surroundings were different, there was no huge parking lot on one side and there was no San Juan de Dios building that in the near future will receive all patients who needed it (this work is still under construction.) The gardens of the Paseo de la Chinita were under construction, so it was a pleasure to see them completed and in perfect harmony with the warm atmosphere of the Marabi land.

Recuerdo que fui en el año 2012 por primera vez y sus alrededores eran diferentes, no existía ese estacionamiento enorme en uno de sus costados y tampoco estaba el edificio San Juan de Dios que en un futuro próximo recibirá a todo paciente que lo necesité. (esta obra aun está en construcción.) Los jardines del paseo de la chinita estaban en construcción, así que fue un placer poder verlos culminados y en perfecta armonía con el ambiente cálido de la tierra marabina.

The first thing we did was to go in to greet the mother of heaven, who is located behind the main altar, you go up some stairs on the right side and go down the other side where you find the altar of the most holy sacrament.

Lo primero que hicimos fue entrar a saludar a la madre del cielo, quien se encuentra ubicada detrás del altar principal, se sube por el lado derecho unas escaleras y bajas por el otro lado donde encuentras ubicado el altar del santísimo sacramente.

Everything is in complete order, there are protocol people, church guards and police on the outside. The basilica has three wings, one central and two lateral. The imposing dome of the main altar allows a light that is reflected throughout the church. When you get to where the virgin is guarded behind a stained glass window you can see how much love the people feel for her.

Todo esta en completo orden, hay gente de protocolo, vigilantes de la iglesia y policías del lado de afuera. La basílica cuenta con tres alas, una central y dos laterales. La imponente cúpula del altar mayor permite traspasar una luz que se refleja en toda la iglesia. Al llegar a donde se encuentra la virgen custodiada detrás de un vitral puedes ver cuanto amor siente el pueblo por ella.

I say this because everything is made of gold, silver, diamonds and other precious stones. It has a bouquet of roses made in beautiful white gold. I don't know if that glass has an alarm, but I imagine that it must have a sensor against anyone who wants to harm it.

I also liked the Louis XV style design of the benches, the truth is that at first I thought they were made of marble, they look elegant and there must be 200 or more.

Digo esto porque todo este hecho en oro, plata, diamantes y demás piedras preciosas. Tiene un ramo de rosas hecho en oro blanco bellísimo. No sé si ese vidrio tenga alarma, pero me imagino que algún sensor debe tener contra cualquier persona que le quiera hacer daño.

Me gusto también el diseño del estilo Luis XV que tienen las bancas, la verdad es que en un principio creí que eran hechas de mármol, se ven elegantes y debe haber unas 200 o más.

Something that impressed me a lot is that the place has air conditioning, since it is a hot city, very hot in its climate; I'm talking about temperatures up to 40 degrees, because even the churches must have their air conditioning to cool off and be as comfortable as possible in the place.

The ceiling is painted with representative images of God, as if it was painted by Michelangelo himself.

Algo que me impresionó muchísimo es que el lugar tiene aire acondicionado, dado que se trata de una ciudad caliente, muy caliente en su clima; te hablo de temperaturas de hasta 40 grados, pues hasta las iglesias deben tener su aire acondicionado para refrescarse y estar lo más cómodo posible en el lugar.

El techo este todo pintado con imágenes representativas de Dios, como si fuese sido pintada por el mismísimo Miguel Ángel.

The columns, doors, stained glass windows, everything is very well designed and cared for. Only the front part was being remodeled, that's why you can see some scaffolding in the pictures.

On the left side is the parish house, gardens, a beautiful fountain where we were able to take several pictures.

Las columnas, las puertas, vitrales, todo esta muy bien diseñado y cuidado. Solo la parte frontal se encontraba en remodelación, por eso puedes ver en las imágenes unos andamios.

Al costado izquierdo esta la casa parroquial, jardines, una hermosa fuente donde nos pudimos tomar varias fotos.

On the front walls of the basilica there were some plaques with legends about the church, so I took a few minutes to read. I was impressed by how you detail the names of the bishops and priests who have done something relevant, especially the story of the bishop who was the one who one day gave everything that the people gave to the virgin in gratitude for her miracles and with that he designed the niche, the bouquet of roses and the huge crown that the virgin wears today.

En las paredes del frente de la basílica había unas placas con leyendas acerca de la iglesia, así que me tome unos minutos para leer. Me impresiono como detallas el nombre de los obispos y sacerdotes que han hecho algo relevante, sobre todo la historia del obispo que fue el que un día todo lo que la gente le regalaba a la virgen en agradecimiento por sus milagros y con eso le diseño el nicho, el ramo de rosas y la inmensa corona que hoy en día lleva la virgen.

On the way out we walk through the gardens of the Paseo de la Chinita, in the middle of which there is a huge fountain surrounded by flowers. Everything is well designed and goes in complete harmony with the details of the basilica. At the end you find a monument to the chinita that measures more than 50 meters. I really liked that part because the water from the fountain is refreshing.

Al salir caminamos por los jardines del paseo de la chinita, por el medio tiene una enorme fuente, la misma esta rodeada de flores. Todo esta bien diseñado y va en completa armonía con los detalles de la basílica. Al finalizar encuentras un monumento a la chinita que mide más de 50 metros. Esa parte me gusto mucho porque el agua de la fuente refresca.

Of course I could not leave there without having a delicious ice cream or better said “cepillado” (typical name for ice cream in Maracaibo).

I just have to say that since that day my soul is happy, definitely this day will be recorded in my mind and my heart as the best ride of the year 2025.

Por supuesto no me podía ir de allí sin tomarme un rico helado o mejor dicho cepillado (nombre típico del helado en Maracaibo)

Solo debo decir que desde ese día mi alma se encuentra feliz, definitivamente este día quedara registrado en mi mente y mi corazón como el mejor paseo del año 2025.
