Portrait in tribute to Miguel Otero Silva [ENG/ESP]
Greetings to everyone in the Alien Art community! Today I'm joining you to share a portrait done in graphite pencils. This time, it's a portrait of Venezuelan journalist and writer Miguel Otero Silva. I made this drawing because this October 26th is his birthday and also because, at the school where I work, we'll be holding a group exhibition in honor of him and the school. The school bears his name and also celebrates its anniversaries thanks to him. With that out of the way, let's continue with the main idea. All children who attend the Drawing Workshop (which, humbly, I direct) must participate in the group exhibition with at least one piece related to the theme I mentioned. I'm excited, as it will be their first exhibition.
¡Saludos a todos en la comunidad de Alien Art! El día de hoy me uno por aquí para compartir con ustedes un retrato hecho en lápices de grafito. Para esta oportunidad, se trata de un retrato del periodista y escritor venezolano, Miguel Otero Silva. He realizado este dibujo porque este 26 de octubre se celebra su natalicio y también porque, en la escuela en dónde trabajo, realizaremos una exposición colectiva en homenaje a él y a la escuela. El colegio lleva su nombre y también celebra sus aniversarios gracias a ello. Dejando eso claro, seguimos con la idea principal. Siendo entonces que todos los niños que asisten Taller de Dibujo (el cual, humildemente, dirijo), deben participar en la exposición colectiva con al menos una pieza que este relacionada al tema que señalé. Estoy emocionada, pues será su primera exposición.
For this portrait, I used only graphite pencils of various sizes: from 12B to 8H. My support was a letter-sized textured cardstock with a weight of about 200g. I wanted to use a textured support because I haven't worked with it in a while, and I also wanted to achieve an interesting result with the lines that appear when you draw. The process involved using a grid. I used a reference image I had on my computer and divided it into 5 columns and 5 rows. I also divided the cardstock into 5 columns and 5 rows. This was within the 1cm margin I had already created.
Para este retrato utilice solo grafitos de varias numeraciones: del 12B al 8H. Mi soporte fue una cartulina texturizada tamaño carta y con un gramaje de unos 200. Quería utilizar un soporte que tuviera textura, pues tengo tiempo sin trabajar con ello y quería también obtener un resultado interesante con esas líneas que va dejando cuando uno dibuja. El proceso a seguir fue con la cuadrícula, me ayude con una imagen se referencia que tenía en la computadora y la dividí en 5 columnas y 5 filas. Así mismo dividí también la cartulina en 5 columnas y 5 filas. Eso dentro del margen de 1 cm que ya había realizado.
Little by little, I began to fit the baselines. With the grid, it's much easier to draw the lines, as I have reference points to help guide me and get closer to the portrait. The children in the class have also learned from it, so it's a useful way to create a portrait. It may seem like everything is already done with the grid, but it also requires a certain amount of skill and careful observation of the reference to be represented. I started from bottom to top and from left to right.
Poco a poco fui encajando las líneas base. Con la cuadricula es mucho más fácil trazar las líneas, pues tengo puntos de referencia que me ayudan a guiarme y acercarme al parecido del retrato. Los niños del salón también han aprendido con ello, así que es una util forma de hacer un retrato. Puede parecer que ya todo está resuelto con la cuadrícula, pero también se necesita cierta habilidad y observar muy bien la referencia a representar. Yo comencé de abajo hacia arriba y de izquierda a derecha.
Little by little, I gradually added the most significant lines, such as the lips, eyes, chin, and suit. Since he's a large man, I was careful not to apply too much force to the skin folds and apply only the appropriate shadows and highlights. When I finished making the lace, I applied shadows and highlights. The reference photograph I used was black and white, so it helped me a little to find a good contrast. At the last minute, I started making wider, more obvious shadows, but to be honest, I finished a little earlier than expected. This is the final result. I still need to finish some things that I feel are missing, but overall, it's good. I hope the children will find it useful as a reference and like it. Poco a poco fui dejando sobre todo, las líneas que fueran más significativas, cómo la de los labios, ojos, mentón y el traje. Cómo es un hombre corpulento, tuve cuidado en no hacer demasiada fuerza en las zonas de los pliegues de la piel y aplicar solo las sombras y luces correspondientes. Cuando termine de hacer el encaje, aplique sombras y luces. La fotografía que utilice de referencia era en blanco y negro, así que me ayudó un poco a encontrar un buen contraste. A último momento comencé a hacer sombras más amplias y evidentes, pero siendo sincera termine un poco antes de lo previsto. Este es el resultado final. Aún debo terminar ciertas cosas que siento le faltan por resolver, pero en términos generales está bien. Yo espero que a los niños les sirva de referencia y les guste.
