Plaza Bolívar de Ciudad Bolívar: una de las plazas más bellas de Venezuela [ENG/ESP]
Greetings to everyone in the Worldmappin community. Today I'm joining you to share a new tourist review. This time, it's Plaza Bolívar in Ciudad Bolívar. It's the largest square in the historic center and also one of the most beautiful squares in all of Venezuela. Remember that in Venezuela, each state usually has a Plaza Bolívar in its city (and even several, as is the case in Caracas), in honor of the hero. Therefore, I think it's a bit of a stretch to claim that it's the most beautiful square, but it's certainly true due to some aspects that truly stand out among the other squares in the country. It's located between Bolívar, Constitución, and Igualdad Streets.
Plaza Bolívar is about 500 square meters (maybe a little more), based on what I can estimate at first glance, since I couldn't find any information on its actual size. The plaza was previously called Plaza Mayor, when the state of Bolívar was still called Angostura and the city was called Santo Tomé de Guayana. Later, in 1867, it was renamed to its current name. The plaza has six sculptures distributed throughout the plaza: in the center is the sculpture of Simón Bolívar, and on the sides (spaced apart) are five female figures representing the five nations liberated by Bolívar: Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and New Granada (representing present-day Colombia and Panama). These sculptures are large, positioned on a pedestal, with ornamental elements representative of their respective nations, and are in very good condition.
Saludos a todos en la comunidad de Worldmappin. El día de hoy me uno por aquí para compartir con ustedes una nueva reseña turística. En esta oportunidad se trata de la Plaza Bolívar de Ciudad Bolívar, siendo la plaza más grande del casco histórico y también una de las plazas que (según mi perspectiva), es una de las más bonitas de toda Venezuela. Recordando que en Venezuela, cada estado suele tener una Plaza Bolívar en su ciudad (e incluso varias plazas, cómo sucede en Caracas), en honor al procer. Por lo que creo que hacer semejante afirmación de que es la plaza mas bonita, es algo muy arriesgado, pero no deja de ser cierto por algunos aspectos que realmente destacan sobre las demás plazas del país. La misma se encuentra entre la Calle Bolívar, Constitución e Igualdad.
La Plaza Bolívar ha de tener unos 500 metros cuadrados (quizá un poco más), según lo que puedo calcular a primera vista ya que no encontré información sobre su tamaño real. La Plaza antes respondía al nombre de Plaza Mayor, cuando todavía el estado Bolívar era Angostura y la ciudad se llamaba Santo Tomé de Guayana. Luego, en 1867, paso a llamarse con el nombre que conocemos actualmente. La plaza posee 6 esculturas que han sido distribuidas por todo el espacio: en el centro se encuentra la de Simón Bolívar, a los laterales (situadas a distancias entre ellas) se encuentran 5 figuras femeninas que representan las cinco naciones liberadas por Bolívar; Venezuela, Perú, Ecuador, Bolivia y Nueva Granada (representando a la actual Colombia y Panamá). Estás esculturas son de gran tamaño, posicionadas sobre un pedestal, con elementos ornamentales representativos de sus respectivas naciones y se conservan en muy buen estado.
One of the attractions of this plaza is its stone walkways and beautiful gardens. I have never seen such a beautiful garden in other plazas as this one, as it truly looks like a garden cared for by someone who loves and cares deeply. I also feel that part of its charm lies in the fact that next to the square is the Santo Tomás de Apóstol Cathedral. Founded in 1790, it has a colonial architectural style, although I'm sure it has some foreign architectural influence. I wasn't able to go inside the cathedral, though, which is a shame because it must be truly beautiful. Also, near the square are the Angostura Congress House, the Manuel Piar Prison, the House of Culture, which also houses the Music School, and the Government Palace. All of these buildings are important to the city.
One detail I can't help but notice is that in 1817, in this very square, the national hero Manuel Piar was executed by firing squad. It is said that Bolívar observed this moment from the balcony overlooking the square in the Congress House. It's a bit hard to imagine that this charming square witnessed such a situation. The truth is, history is there to be told and to inform us about our past and our present. Finally, for those who wish to get there, access is usually easy via public transportation, and the rest is a matter of walking, walking, and walking, exploring every inch of the historic center. Uno de los atractivos que tiene esta plaza son sus caminerias de piedra y sus bellos jardines. Realmente no había visto un jardín tan bonito en otras plazas cómo en esta, pues realmente parece un jardín cuidado por alguien que le tiene mucho cariño y esmero. Además siento que parte de su encanto está en que al lado de la plaza se encuentra la Catedral Santo Tomás de Apóstol, fue fundad en 1790 y la cual posee un estilo arquitectónico colonial, aunque estoy segura de que tiene algún tipo de influencia arquitectónica foránea. Aunque no pude entrar en el interior de la catedral, siendo una lastima pues debe ser realmente preciosa. También, en los alrededores de la plaza se encuentra la Casa del Congreso de Angostura, la Casa Prisión Manuel Piar, la Casa de la Cultura y también sede de la escuela de Música y el Palacio de la Gobernación. Siendo todos estos edificios importante de la ciudad.
Un detalle que no puedo dejar de pasar desapercibido es que en 1817, en esta misma plaza, fue fusilado el procer Manuel Piar. Se comenta que Bolívar observó este momento desde el balcón que da a la plaza en la Casa del Congreso. Es un poco difícil imaginar que esta plaza tan encantadora fue testigo de semejante situación. Lo cierto es que, la historia está para contarse y darnos por enterados de nuestro pasado y nuestro presente. Finalmente, para quienes deseen llegar hasta allá, el acceso suele ser facil a través de transporte público y lo demás esta en caminar, caminar y caminar, recorriendo casa centímetro del casco histórico.
