Anime Review - Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (2023)[ENG/ESP]
Greetings to everyone in The Anime Realm community! Today I'm joining us again to bring you an anime review. This time it's "Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan," the new adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki's manga. The project began in 2021, when Liden Films (an animation studio) decided to make the new adaptation, with Hideyo Yamamoto as director and Hideyuki Kurata as screenwriter, with Nobuhiro supervising throughout the animation process. I previously published a review of the first adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin (from 1996 to 1998), so there I talked specifically about the story's context, the characters, and a few other details. However, here I'll focus more on my impression of the series, some differences with the first adaptation, and its advantages and disadvantages. I know comparisons are odious, but it's just for entertainment purposes, and to be honest, it's one of my favorite series, so I don't have anything particularly negative to say. That said, here we go.

En esta oportunidad se trata de "Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan", la nueva adaptación del manga de Nobuhiro Watsuki. El proyecto surgió en el año 2021, dónde "Liden Films" (una casa de estudios de animación) decidió realizar la nueva adaptación, teniendo cómo director a Hideyo Yamamoto y de guionista a Hideyuki Kurata, contando con la supervisión de Nobuhiro durante todo el proceso de animación. Anteriormente traje por acá una reseña sobre la primera adaptación de Rurouni Kenshin (del año 1996 al 1998), por lo que allí hablé particularmente sobre el contexto de la historia, los personajes y algunos detalles más, pero aquí me enfocaré más en cómo me ha parecido la serie, algunas diferencias con la primera adaptación, sus ventajas y desventajas. Sé que las comparaciones son odiosas, pero es solo con fines de entretenimiento y para ser sinceros, es una de mis series favoritas, así que no tengo particularmente nada negativo que decir. Dicho esto, aquí vamos.
I must admit I had my reservations about the series because new adaptations rarely turn out to be enjoyable or surpass the originals (my personal opinion). Similarly, since it was about Kenshin, I was a little excited about it. And thanks to that, I waited some time before watching the series (because I also wanted to watch a good portion of it, not just one season), until I finally got around to it. It's a bit strange to watch it because you can't help but think about the previous series. The first episode unfolds similarly to the original, except that new characters were added and a different plot thread was introduced, but with an ending where Kenshin effectively stays at the dojo and begins a new life. From then on, the subsequent episodes follow that same pattern; Some plot changes, a bit more emphasis on the story of some main characters, slightly more mature fights, and a focus on the history of 19th-century Japan. As for the script, I think the idea is more intended to highlight the events that occurred before and during the Meiji era.
Debo admitir que tenía mis reservas sobre la serie porque pocas veces las nuevas adaptaciones resultan agradables o superan las originales (opinión personal). De igual forma, cómo se trataba de Kenshin, estaba un poco entusiasmada con eso. Y gracias a eso, deje pasar algún tiempo antes de ver la serie (porque también quería ver un buena parte y no solo 1 temporada), hasta que finalmente la pude ver. Es un poco extraño verla porque es inevitable hacerlo y no pensar en la serie anterior. El primer capítulo sucede de forma similar al original, con diferencia de que se añadieron nuevos personajes y un curso diferente en el medio de la trama, pero con un final donde efectivamente, Kenshin de queda en el dojo y comienza una nueva vida. De ahí en más, los capítulos sucesivos siguen ese mismo patrón; algunos cambios en la trama, resaltar un poco más la historia de algunos personajes principales, peleas un poco más maduras y un enfoque en la historia del Japón del siglo XIX. Por lo que en cuestión de guión, creo que la idea va un poco más con intensión de resaltar los hechos acontecidos antes y durante de la era Meji.
The character designs remained faithful to the original, retaining colors, hairstyles, clothing, and more, except that this time their humanoid forms are more realistic and less cartoonish. This also affects the humor somewhat, as this version lacks such intensely comical moments: exaggerated grimaces, character quips, and Kenshin's beloved "gold." To be honest, I miss that because I think those moments of humor didn't affect the seriousness with which one viewed the series. As they say, "one thing has nothing to do with the other." Regarding the music, I found it a bit difficult to surpass the previous one. For example, the iconic introductory song "Sobakasu." But above all, I think the incidental music left a lot to be desired. The battles, romances, tragedy, and other moments were intensified by the background music in the previous version of the series, and the current one doesn't achieve the same effect.
El diseño de los personajes se mantuvo fiel a la original, conservando colores, peinados, vestimentas y demás, con excepción a que en esta oportunidad sus formas humanoides son más realistas y menos caricaturescas. Lo que también afecta un poco en la cuestión del humor, pues en esta versión no existen momentos tan intensamente cómicos; muecas exageradas, ocurrencias de los personajes y el tan querido "oro" de Kenshin. Siendo sincera eso lo extraño pues creo que esos momentos de humor no afectaban la seriedad con la que uno veía a la serie. Cómo dirían por ahí "una cosa no tiene que ver con la otra". Con respecto a la música, me pareció que es un poco difícil de superar al anterior. Cómo por ejemplo, la icónica canción introductoria "Sobakasu". Pero ante todo creo que la música incidental dejo mucho que desear. Las batallas, los romances, la tragedia y demás momentos se veían intensificados con la música de fondo en la versión anterior de la serie y la de ahora no logra el mismo efecto.
Overall, despite some aspects that I feel could be improved and are truly vital (for me, the music is unforgivable, as it gave it soul and heart), the series is enjoyable. I like seeing this new twist on the story, told from a different point of view and the freshness of the series. It generates curiosity and interest. It doesn't become tedious or overly long, as it could have been in the original version (there were arcs and moments that were tedious). It feels like freshly baked bread, and I think that helps attract new people, a younger audience. I think clinging too closely to the previous version can create conflict, due to nostalgia and affection, but it really is a good adaptation. I'm looking forward to the next season and we'll see what happens. Without further ado, thank you so much for stopping by and reading my post.
En general, a pesar de algunas cuestiones en las que siento puede mejorar y que son realmente vitales (para mí es imperdonable lo de la música, pues le daba alma y corazón, aunque capaz soy yo y la música es ideal para la época), la serie es agradable. Me gusta ver este nuevo giro de la historia, contando desde otro punto de vista y la frescura que tiene la serie. Genera curiosidad e interés. No se vuelve pesada o demasiado larga cómo podía suceder en la versión original (habían arcos y momentos que eran tediosos). Se siente cómo pan recién salido del honor y creo que eso ayuda a atraer a nuevas personas, un público más joven. Creo que aferrarse mucho a la versión anterior puede generar conflicto, por la nostalgia y el cariño, pero realmente es una buena adaptación. Espero la próxima temporada y veremos que sucede. La adaptación esta muy buena.. Me ha gusado la nuerva versión, sin embargo en cuanto a animación prefiero la anterior, especialmente en los momentos de los combates, son de anteriormente los personajes estaban mejor dibujados y las expresiones faciales cambiaban mucho, pero si me ha gustado lo nuevo.

En el ánime clasico, la batalla entre Kenshin y Saito luego de 10 años fue algo increible, toda la acción, aun cuando habían solo silencios estuvo lleno de suspenso.

Como nunca he visto antes el anime original entonces no sé qué tan bien se ve en comparación este remake. Por otro lado, fue gracias a esta nueva versión que conocí al fin está famosa obra, así que algo sí hay que agradecerle a los Remakes que están haciendo. Me gusta mucho el estilo de animación, los personajes y los combates. La banda sonora también es algo que me atrae bastante.

Sólo algunas partes específicas de la primera temporada hasta ahora, y hasta ahora prefiero la versión original, aunque ya suponía que me pasaría eso porque la original es simplemente muy buena (en lo de la música en especial). Y además ya había visto las cinco películas live action, que también son muy buenas, así que este nuevo animé no tiene mucho para ofrecerme hasta que animen la saga de Enishi, ya que no adaptaron esa en la serie anterior y no vi la OVA donde lo hicieron
