Greetings to everyone in The Anime Realm community! Today I'm joining you all to share a new review of Japanese animation. This time, I'm bringing you an anime that's one of my favorites and was quite popular at the time thanks to its plot, characters, and animation. It's a classic horror/drama anime series. It's Hell Girl, from 2005, developed by Aniplex and Studio DEEN. The plot revolves around Enma Ai, a seemingly ordinary girl (except for her eccentric appearance), who has an unusual duty: to search for souls on Earth to take them to hell. At first, it seems like a shocking idea, but it's impossible not to find it appealing. Why take them to hell? What power does she have to do something like that? Who makes the decisions behind all this? So join me.

The story is set in Japan. There, we are presented with a series of individual stories (different, chapter by chapter) where several people going through difficult times desire revenge on those who oppress them. The common denominator of each chapter is the character of Emma (and her helpers) and a curious website that only appears at midnight. This website presents a singular premise: "I will cleanse your grudge." On it, you can write the name of the person you wish would die and end up in hell. If you send the name, you will accept the contract with Emma, who will unexpectedly appear at your location and give you a straw man with a red ribbon around its neck. The deal is this: if you pull the red ribbon, the person you want revenge on will die immediately, but if you don't pull the red ribbon, nothing will happen. The point is that if you decide to take revenge and send someone else to hell, you too will be cursed, and when the day of your death comes, you will end up in hell.

Much like Death Note, Hell Girl presents itself as a "take and revenge" anime. I think Hell Girl even predates Death Note (and even if it weren't), I think the way they interact is very different. Hell Girl is almost poetic (it also borrows something from Dante's Inferno), with Emma's mesmerizing image, that air of mystery she possesses, and how she often seems to play a role she doesn't want (that of taking revenge for others). As if she were burdened with her own sins. I think I speak for many when I say that it was exciting when one of the characters logged into the website at midnight to decide their fate and that of another. It was also exciting when Emma arrived on her carousel to find the cursed person and the dramatization her assistants put on to announce to that person that their time on earth was over.

For me, Hell Girl is exceptional. Unlike Death Note, the power to send someone to hell or not can be wielded by multiple people. Not just one person, as Death Note happens. Also, something that hurts and impresses a lot about anime are the stories. Many of them deal with injustice, abuse, mistreatment, violence, and other situations to which many characters are often subjected. Some stories tend to be very raw, but very human. Understanding that they are simply victims who want to take some control of their lives. Sometimes, without really realizing what it means to send someone to the afterlife. We as viewers also lend ourselves to that situation and decide whether that person deserves it or not. Finally, Hell Girl is charming in its own way, and I think it fits well for any era of humanity. Without further ado, thank you so much for stopping by.

Hello! Excellent choice of anime! It's a series that really makes you reflect on human nature and the consequences of our actions. I loved the way the series presents revenge as a central theme, and how Enma Ai becomes a mysterious and fascinating figure.

This anime generates endless feelings, we can connect with the victims and we are left wondering what we would have done in their place? They had in their hands the possibility to take revenge and take justice into their own hands, but that had a very high cost for their soul, a difficult decision, but some, the majority, were already determined to condemn their soul in exchange for the suffering of others 👀 turbio jaja

Greetings Buhito 🤗 how are you always welcome your presence. That last line you say is quite harsh, but true. Many people never thought about others before committing their actions. And well, sometimes justice doesn't come on its own. Let me think... I concur with "Turbio" 😅

This anime brings back so many memories—what a classic! I totally agree with you; it was one of those shows that kept you hooked episode after episode with its intense stories and the premise of the midnight website.

The truth is that many of the stories were heartbreaking; they made you empathize a lot with the people who reached their limit and turned to the website. An anime that makes you think a lot about human nature and revenge. What a great review! It has made me want to watch it again.

Cheers 🤗 yes, it was totally painful to watch some chapters. It really could get twisted and uncomfortable, but still very beautiful. Even the revenge issue can be seen that way. And yes, I would also like to watch it again although I don't know where to bacer it. Thanks for stopping by.

I haven't seen it but from what I read it looks brutal. When a story touches on deep things and based on that it builds the plot and the behaviors of certain characters it really catches my attention. Revenge is one of the most visceral human feelings, having the power to decide who to send to hell depending on how you feel about that person is incredible and disturbing.

Noted to watch it, thanks for the review.

Greetings 🤗 that's right, revenge is a difficult issue to deal with. I would say the best thing to do is to refuse it, for all the consequences they bring, but everyone is a different head. It's a great anime, I recommend it. Thanks for stopping by
