9th Tourism in Carabobo: Museum of Anthropology and History, Henriqueta Peñalver (Casa Celis) [ENG/ESP]
Greetings to everyone in the Worldmappin community! Today I'm joining you here to share a new installment of Tourism in Carabobo. This time, we'll be talking about a very special place for me, one of the first buildings I visited when I first became interested in the houses/museums in Valencia's historic center. This is the Henriqueta Peñalver Museum of Anthropology and History, also known as La Casa Celis. Founded in 1971, it's located between Soublette Avenue and Comercio Street, and on the corner, you'll find the memorable Casa Celis. There, you'll meet Claudia Salazar, the museum's director and director of the Lisandro Alvarado Foundation. Along with Lilly, the museum guide, they'll be in charge of showing us around the beautiful mansion. Join me on this tour.
¡Saludos a todos en la comunidad de Worldmappin! El día de hoy me uno por aquí para compartir con ustedes una nueva entrega de Turismo en Carabobo. En esta oportunidad estaremos hablando de un lugar muy especial para mí pues uno de los primeros edificios que visite cuando comencé a interesarme por las casas/museos del casco histórico de Valencia. Se trata del Museo de Antropología e Historia, Henriqueta Peñalver, también conocido cómo La Casa Celis. Fundada en el año 1971. Ubicada entre la Avenida Soublette y la Calle Comercio, encontraremos en la esquina a la memorable Casa Celis. Allí, encontraremos a Claudia Salazar, Directora del Museo y también, Directora de la Fundación Lisandro Alvarado. Junto con Lilly, la guía del museo, quiénes se encargarán de enseñarnos la bella casona. Acompáñenme en este recorrido.
For this visit, I went with my mother and stepfather, who also joined me in the Valencia fever. My stepfather, in particular, was quite enthusiastic, as he is quite knowledgeable about the history of Carabobo and Valencia. He followed and helped me on this journey with the background of chroniclers and readings of various authors. My mother usually enjoys this subject, but her passion lies more in works of art, although she practically has a newspaper library at home. So together we went very early to the museum, noticing that it was closed. Not wanting to leave empty-handed, we insisted on knocking on the door. Luckily, they were inside, and we explained the situation. They let us in. This was a great satisfaction.
Para esta visita fuí con mi mamá y padrastro, quiénes también se unieron a la fiebre de conocer Valencia. Mi padrastro en especial, estaba bastante entusiasmado pues él es bastante instruido en cuanto los temas relacionados a la historia de Carabobo y de Valencia. Siguiendo y ayudándome en este recorrido con los antecedentes de cronistas y lecturas de varios autores. Mi mamá suele gustar sobre ello, pero su pasión va más cerca de las obras artísticas. Aunque ella tiene prácticamente una hemeroteca en casa. Por lo que juntos fuimos bien temprano al museo, notando que estaba cerrado. Cómo no queríamos irnos con las manos vacías, insistimos en tocar la puerta. Por suerte, estaban dentro y explicamos la situación. Nos dejaron entrar. Por lo que eso fue una gran satisfacción.
Next, we entered the house through the entrance hall and reached the first central courtyard of the mansion. There we were greeted by a replica of the sculpture "The Bacchante" by Andrés Pérez Mujica (a visual artist from Valencia). Large mansions of this style usually have many rooms, which serve as exhibition halls for the museum. In the Celis House, we will find: Two rooms are dedicated to Prehistory in the Lake Basin (Lake Valencia or Lake Tacarigua), two Provincial Art rooms (18th-19th centuries), a room dedicated to the Foundation of Valencia, the Library, and the Kitchen and Drying Courtyard (which also houses the former Stables). In the first rooms, we find objects found in the Lake Basin; there are artifacts from the Tacarigua Indians and prehistoric animals. In the Art rooms, we find paintings and sculptures by Andrés Pérez Mujica, as well as works by Antonio Herrera Toro. In the third room, we find ancient objects donated by local residents, as well as sacred elements from the period: the pulpit (and other sacred furnishings), paintings, vessels, and liturgical ornaments, among others.
A continuación, entramos a la casa por medio del zaguán y llegamos al primer patio central de la casona. Allí nos recibe la réplica de la escultura de "La Bacante" de Andrés Pérez Mujica (artista plástico de Valencia). Las casonas de este estilo suelen tener muchos cuartos, los cuales, sirven al museo como salas de exhibiciones. En la Casa Celis encontraremos; dos salas dedicadas a la Prehistoria en la Cuenca del Lago (Lago de Valencia o Lago Tacarigua), dos salas de Arte Provincial (del Siglo XVIII - XIX), una sala dedicada a la Fundación de Valencia, la Biblioteca y Cocina y Patio de Secado (dónde también está la antigua Caballeriza). En las primeras salas encontraremos objetos que fueron hallados en la Cuenca del Lago; se encuentran elementos de los indios Tacariguas y animales prehistóricos. En las salas de Arte, encontremos obras pictóricas y escultóricas de Andrés Pérez Mujica, así cómo obras de Antonio Herrera Toro. En la tercera sala encontremos objetos antiguos donados por los lugareños, así cómo elementos sacros de la época; púlpito (y otros mobiliarios sagrados), obras pictóricas, vasos y ornamentos litúrgicos, entre otros.
Over the years, the House has preserved, conserved, and recorded many of the elements that preserve the history of Carabobo's past, making it intrinsically important. If you're interested in history (understanding Valencia's past and present), this is the place to be. The house also currently hosts workshops related to the arts, such as ceramics, so if you're interested, you can stop by and inquire about it. It's worth mentioning that, as one of the most important buildings in the historic center, it receives the support it deserves. So, supporting museums (by giving visibility, attending, collaborating, and so on) is a good start to once again elevate Valencia. La Casa ha cumplido a través de los años con el deber de preservar, conservar y registrar, muchos de los elementos que guardan historia del pasado de Carabobo, por lo que su importancia es intrínseca. Es un lugar que, si te interesa la historia (entender el pasado y el presente de Valencia), este es el lugar indicado. Actualmente la casa también se presta para talleres relacionadas a las artes, cómo la cerámica, por lo que si están interesados pueden acercarse para preguntar al respecto. Cabe mencionar que siendo una de las casas más relevantes del casco histórico, reciba el apoyo merecido. Así que, apoyar (dándole visibilidad, asistiendo, colaborando y demás) a los museos es un buen comienzo para enaltecer nuevamente a Valencia.
