Yesterday I finished reading a beautiful book that someone lent me, and it left me with a deep melancholy, though also with a lovely feeling I can't quite explain. It's called When Marnie Was There by Joan G. Robinson, and it tells the story of Anna, a twelve-year-old orphan living with adoptive parents. Despite their loving care, Anna struggles with adjustment and self-esteem, constantly perceiving herself as ugly and useless, even though that's not true. On the advice of a doctor who noticed her depression, her adoptive parents decide to send her to spend the summer with her aunt and uncle in Norfolk, England. Although she initially struggles to adapt, she later meets a girl with whom she feels a connection (Marnie). They begin to get to know each other, and as the days go by, they forge a strong friendship. Marnie even helps Anna confront her past to find her identity and reconcile with herself.
Ayer terminé de leer un precioso libro que me prestaron y que me dejó con una melancolía muy grande, aunque también con una bonita sensación que no sé muy bien como explicar, se trata de El Recuerdo de Marnie, por Joan G. Robinson, el cuál nos cuenta la historia de Anna, una niña huérfana de doce años que vive con padres adoptivos, pero a pesar de que ellos son muy amorosos con ella, la niña tiene serios problemas de adaptación y de autoestima, siempre se percibe a sí misma como fea e inútil, a pesar de que eso no es verdad. Por consejos del médico que la notó muy deprimida, sus padres adoptivos deciden enviarla a pasar una temporada durante el verano con sus tíos en Norfolk (Inglaterra) y a pesar de que al inicio ella no logra adaptarse, luego conoce a una niña con la que encuentra afinidad (Marnie) juntas comienzan a conocerse y con el paso de los días llegan a forjar una sólida amistad, tanto que Marnie ayuda a Anna a confrontar su pasado para hallar su identidad y reconciliarse consigo misma.
However, there is something strange about Marnie; sometimes she seems so solid and real, but at other times it is as if she does not exist. The house where she lives appears abandoned and the marsh blocks access to it, until finally Anna discovers the truth about Marnie, a truth that unites them beyond a simple friendship.
Sin embargo hay algo raro en Marnie, algunas veces parece tan sólida y real, pero en otras ocasiones es como si no existiera, la casa donde vive se muestra en abandono y la marisma bloquea el acceso a ella, hasta que finalmente Anna descubre la verdad sobre Marnie, una verdad que las une más allá de una simple amistad.
When I started reading the book, I couldn't understand Anna either. She seemed ungrateful to the adoptive parents who truly loved her and did everything they could to make her happy. However, as I continued reading, I realized that Anna was very confused. She had a profound sense of abandonment that made her unhappy, and she couldn't control it. That's why she couldn't adapt anywhere; she felt she had no past, and someone who doesn't know where they come from can hardly know where they want to go. But when she meets Marnie, she begins to open her heart. She identifies with her because she's almost always alone, so they are two lonely girls trying to find their own identity. However, Marnie's character can be disconcerting at times. Sometimes she feels like a strong, solid rock, and other times she's very ethereal and melancholic, but there's no doubt that she's a fundamental character for Anna's development.
Cuando empecé a leer el libro yo tampoco podía entender a Anna, ella parecía desagradecida con los padres adoptivos que la querían de verdad y hacían todo lo posible por verla feliz, sin embargo a medida que fui avanzando en la lectura me di cuenta que Anna estaba muy confundida, tenía un sentimiento de abandono muy grande que la hacía sentir infeliz, y realmente ella no podía controlar eso, por esa razón es que no podía adaptarse a ningún lugar, porque ella sentía que no tenía un pasado, y quien no sabe de donde viene difícilmente sabrá hacia dónde quiere ir. Pero cuando conoce a Marnie comienza a abrir su corazón, se siente identificada con ella porque casi siempre que la ve está sola, de modo que son dos niñas solitarias tratando de hallar su propia identidad, sin embargo el personaje de Marnie llega a desconcertar en algunas ocasiones pues a veces se siente como un personaje firme, una roca sólida, y en otras es muy etérea y melancólica, pero no cabe dudas de que es un personaje fundamental para el desarrollo de Anna.
In this way, Anne undergoes a significant character evolution and development, transforming from a withdrawn, sickly child, incapable of accepting love and attention, with difficulties socializing and adapting, into a child perfectly capable of accepting the love and affection of her adoptive parents, a cheerful child also able to understand the sacrifices others have had to make. By understanding her past, Anne is able to recognize the reasons behind many events in her life. The trip to Norfolk was also a journey into the past, a place of reconnection with herself and her essence; the countryside becomes a perfect place for healing. Meanwhile, the mansion where Marnie lives could be seen as a symbol of the abandonment both girls feel, the melancholy that binds them, and the return to oneself.
De esta forma Anne tiene una evolución y desarrollo de personaje bastante importante, porque pasa de ser una niña retraída, enfermiza, incapaz de aceptar amor y atenciones, con dificultades para la socialización y adaptación, a una niña perfectamente capaz de aceptar el amor y el cariño de sus padres adoptivos, una niña alegre y capaz también de entender los sacrificios que otros han tenido que hacer. Al entender su pasado Anna es capaz de reconocer el porqué de muchos asuntos en su vida. El viaje a Norfolk fue también un viaje al pasado, un lugar de reencuentro con ella misma y con su esencia, el campo se convierte en un lugar perfecto para sanar. Por su parte la mansión donde vive Marnie, podría ser un símbolo del abandono que ambas niñas sienten, la melancolía que las une, y el retorno a sí mismo.
The book left me with a feeling of gratitude for the past that shaped me into who I am today, to value what I had and still have, and to understand that what our parents do, whether we understand it or not, is for our own good. It was a very emotional novel in the end, but I truly enjoyed it, so I highly recommend it. I'll leave you now, but I'm sending virtual kisses and hugs to all of you 😘 🤗
El libro me dejó con una sensación de agradecimiento por ese pasado que me llevó a ser lo que soy hoy en día, a valorar lo que tuve y lo tengo, y a entender que lo que nuestros padres hacen en su momento, lo entendamos o no, es por nuestro bien. Fue una novela muy emotiva al final, pero de verdad la disfruté absolutamente, por lo tanto se las recomiendo. Por ahora los dejo pero les envío besos y abrazos virtuales a todos ustedes 😘 🤗
